I searched 15 pages and found 2 loosely related topics which were of no help. I didn't ask for every little detail, just the major parts. If there is several parts that won't interchange, all you had to do is say that.

there are only 5 things that won't interchange from a 85 to a 86 250r,,,

Red Rider

And those 5 things would be?

250RMAD,
What about the axle and sprocket hub?
I've was told the two years aren't interchangable.

While it is true those 5 things differ from an 85 to an 86, they'll still bolt right up to either frame.

the tail light brackets on the 85 are welded to the frame so it won't bolt to a 86 frame,,,,,

an 85 carrier will not bolt to or work in a 86 swingarm

an 85 caliper bracket wil not bolt to a 86 brake stay

an 85 brake stay wil not work on a 86

although a 85 swingarm will bolt to a 86 frame if you don't have a complete unit you have nothing,,,,

as for the axle i have heard of people using 85 axles in other years,,, when i get the axle out of my 86 i wlii measure to see the difference,,,

Mad250R, maybe we're both interpreting 86X's question differently, but I believe his original question, slightly restated, was, "Can you put 85 parts on a 86 frame or vice versa?" And the answer would be yes, with the exception of the tail light. I was unaware of the 85's tail light bracket being welded to the frame. I'm so  . That just goes to show you that you never stop learning. :)

Nice trike redrider. The triples are different.

THE triple clamps will interchange ,, there is 1 degree difference in the front ends ,,i don't know if it is built into the clamps or not ,but you can use 85's on a 86 and visa versa,,,,,

Are 85 and 86 250 R frames the same?? If not what is different?? What parts won't interchange, if any?? Thanks in advance.

the frames are not the same,,,, fuel tank mounts are different ,, tail light brackets are different ,,,fork angle is different ,,, see list already posted

I was thinking the 85 forks were smaller diameter. I am not positive the triples are different. Maybe I shouldn't have posted that. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/sad/533.gif

trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro, I thought they were pretty much completey interchangeable. I'm glad I got rid of my 85 parts bike for an 86 frame to put my 86 parts and stuff on it.

That's me, and Yes, you are correct sir! It's got a CR250 top end. Didn't you go by a different name on DU, as well as 3W.org? I ask because of that familiar avatar.

Red Rider/Kasey,

Great to hear you guys again. I remember you gents from the old Desert Union site! Nice to find some familiar names from there. They had a great forum with some top blokes as members. Some of the banter was great.........as well as it being a great source of info. Whatever happened to them anyway?

That new avatar looks great Red Rider.

I miss the old banter and informative discussions on DU. :(

Like the post when RedRider and his brother were talkin smack at each other. Unbeknownst to an unsuspecting gent who tried to appeal for cooler heads and group hugs. He quickly learned about the unrelenting jesting on the board.

Sandrooster, thanks! Yeah, it's amazing what a wash & a little polish can do, not to mention the background change from backyard dirt to Dumont Dunes sand.
