So ive been watching cave rider and R-tifacts do several trike builds and helping where i can, they have all turned out awsome. So i got the itch to do one for myself, Ive always liked the looks of the tri-z but never had the chance to get one at a decent price....... Until last week, I picked one up cheap. it ran and it was complete for the most part, needed plastics and a complete resto. PERFECT:naughty:
So far I have tore it completly apart cleaned 25 years of oil and grease off. sand blasted the frame, swing arm and other items this morning and gave them a coat of primer. it was origanaly yellow and black but i always liked how the black and red z's looked . and it looks like the only color rear fenders i can get oe is black so black and red is what im going with. have a few pics but cant seem to get them to load?

im ordering the swing arm bearings i keep seeing bearings that say 86 only is there a differance? they seem to be cheaper for the 86 only. mine is an 85 just didnt know if there was any differences between 85 and 86 tri-z 's

im making some head way still looking for some parts then tearing into the engine. 132475132476132477132478132479 and no the rims and yellow spring are not whats staying on it i swapped out the rear hubs for a set of 300ex hubs. they spaced it out 1.5 per side and I now can run honda rims which are much easier to come by in silver. The spring will be red after i have it rebuilt

I got your engine stripped down to her panties, got the crank bearings/seals/piston kit and reeds. Once we get a fresh hole punched through the cylinder we will getter done !!! That still had the tin reeds in it (virgin motor). I think you'll be happy, you've got one hell of a platform for a nice trike !!! BRAAAPPPP!!!!

Im still looking for a foot shifter and a right side air scoop any help would be appreciated.

its coming along very nicely, what did you use to paint the swinger?

bigredridr
10-24-2011, 05:13 PM
thanks. I used some heavy duty enamel paint navy grey i believe. IT was the closet color i could find in a durable paint. works for me as i plan on riding this occasionaly when its done

i also got the radiator shrouds i ordered in a couple days ago. new from DC plastics. they will work but im not to impressed with them there finish was kind of flat looking(low gloss) and they required alot of trimming of excess material off like around the louver holes and around the edges. but they were fairly cheap so cant complain to much il post some pics up of them soon

Earlier i was at caveriders shop discussing my Z when i told him that the yamaha rear fenders that I had just purchased from yamaha had a set of holes in them that the original fenders didnt have. he seemed to think that they came up with a bracket that helped support them from cracking thus the two bolt holes. the holes are located just off the rear corners of the seat near the grab bar.my question is does anyone have this bracket? or pics. i can fab one up at my shop i just want to see what there supposed to look like.

The 86 rear tank support bracket had those mounts on them for those holes. The 85 bracket did not.

300ex Hub splines match up ?

bigredridr
11-13-2011, 08:27 AM
i beleive that they are a couple mm smaller as far as the spline diameter than yamaha. but they fit very snuggly on a slightly warn axle same spline count and length just a bit smaller ID. Theres a thread on here somewheres about parts that interchange with the TRI-Z. very helpfull
