What is the difference in the 85 vs the 86 Tecate engine? Were there any upgrades? I know the frame and suspension was completely reworked. What about the engine? Come and post away all you Tecate experts!

T3 MOTORS!!!

The 84 and the 85 are the same as each other. The 86 and 87 are close to each other, only minor differences.
As for the diffs between the 85 and the 86 their are alot. The 86 has the KIPS powervalve system, it has the actuator in the base (waterpump side) and the KIPS in the jug. The 85 exhaust comes out the front, but off centered to the rt f the down tube. The 86 is out the center of the jug between a 2 tube down tube.
All Tecates were 5 speeds, most of the cluch parts will interchange, some trans parts will exchange, same rod, some gaskets are the same, but the 2 motors are very different.

I would have to agree with mike,But the 86 and 87's were the same motor.Although one time I seen an 86,It had the 86,87 frame and plastic but it had the 85 motor and the 85 swingarm.I don't know if this was something kawasaki did,or if it was somebodys fabrication. If it was a fabrication I don't know why somebody would want to take 86 newer up to date parts off and replace them with 85 parts.I know for sure 86 and 87's were the same. They had the kips valves, later models did not.

The 86 and 87 do have some differences. I have 2 86s and a 87 tecate rite now, plus a pile of misc spare parts. When I was rebuilding my 87 motor, I found some differances. They use different shiftshaft seals and different cluch basket gears. There are a few more diffs, but I can't remember them w/o looking at my notes LOL.
