Back in the day when my father was racing trikes, I remember a few of these running the tracks. I was a little guy with big dreams to be like my dad. However, instead of getting a converted Kawasaki, my dad bought me a Tri-Zinger.....Which I still have.

Anyway, I have searched the archives and have found some great info. and pictures on this site. Now to my question...................

I know there are a few people who built cutom trikes for thier kids (And themselves..LOL), but has anyone produced a kit for the rest of us to use? Is there anyone out there that will do a conversion for a guy like me who couldn't fabricate a paper plane?

It would be killer if someone could make the conversion kits....TCP??? :naughty:

You might be able to get an R-55 and convert it to use a KX60 or KX80 engine...

I kinda doubt that. The laydown motors are a structural part of those frames and a KX motor is not nearly the same.

I know a guy had a converted 60 on here years ago, trikeaholic. Think he sold it to orangecounty, can't quite remember. It was a kit a company made. i'll try to do a search and find the old thread

I searched for a while to find one, and passed on the one I found do to lack of work. Still kick myself for that, it was complete and running,$1300, made by A+.

dcreel...Awesome article!

Someone needs to step up and make us aout 50 or so kits? It sounds easy, but I'm sure it would be a pain.

Once you figure out how to do it, then put it to an assembly line, then it's pretty straight forward.

Hell, if I had the funds, machining and welding experience I would probably have a crack at it.

I think the biggest issue is either making, or finding a swingarm that will fit into a KX65 frame. Then either custom machining triple trees, or finding ones that will work. You could probably get away with the KX65 suspension components.

So you have absolutely none of the knowledge, resources, or funding to attempt a project like this. Good thing you brought up giving it a whirl.

I was debating on going head to head with Lockheed Martin sometime soon, but I've never built a plane, nor do I know how, and I'm fairly short on funds to attempt a project of that scale. Good thought though.

The problem with kits is, what to make them for... Not too many people are going to shell out +/-4K for a new KX85 then chop it up pay another $1500 and convert it (not saying it wouldn't be cool, just saying that the demand wouldn't warrant the investment... granted nobody has updated their 85's for a long time and that may ease the fitment burden it would still be a long shot. As far as building a kit for the older models... that would decrease demand for individual kits because of various updates etc over the years... What would be nice is if someone made those back fenders still... So in reality if you want one you gotta luck out and find one our build a one off prototype...

I agree with you....but it would be a cool project. I'm not done with this yet. I could probably build something off of an older 60 or 80, but I do not have the resources to make the plastics. I imagine the cost of doing this on my own would make it unrealistic anyway. I would be willing to spend the cash if I knew 100% that it would turn out right.....But, projects like these never go as planned...LOL.

Good comparison, since motorcycles and aircraft both share key correlations.

FWIW, I said IF.

Please stop trying to talk about things you don't know...If you don't know and have questions about something and ask people that do, its fine.

If you don't know, and your trying to provide advice or ideas to someone else that doesn't know either, it isn't.

Use fenders off a small 4 wheeler. It wouldn't really be that hard, that article pretty much spelled it out. any reputable welding shop should be able to cut and widen the tripples. Use newer 4 wheeler carrier, axle, and brakes. I think i'm talking myself into this...

Except what I was saying is that IF I had the necessary tools, then I would probably have a crack at it. I seriously don't see anything wrong with making a statement like that. It's not giving advice or incorrect information to anyone.

Is it a water cooled jug? (that may have started in 86) But I do have an (well my son has) an 87 KX80 I just recently did a frame up rebuild on, if the price is right on the two of them (fender & cylinder) I may be interested

86 KX 60. You can't believe how this thing screams. It seems like it doesn't have much power till 8000 rpm then it just takes off. I'm looking for a conversion kit if anyone wants to part with one. If not, i have most of the conversion planned out in my head.
