Hello everyone, Its been a few weeks since I posted (been wrenching and
riding my other bikes) but I wanted to put up some photos of the project.
the case split went well! I took everyones advice, got the special tools needed from Honda, and took my time.
as I promised I will try and put up a few photos that may help other first
time case splitters like myself.
the motor came out just fine, topend was no problem, I did carefully mark
the position of the cam gear, pulse unit, timing chain etc in the hope that
it will go back together in the right spot.
the case halves were stubborn but did eventually separate without prying
(very temping) I found that by lifting off the left side of the case with the
motor on its side I was able to keep the trans gears in place (whew!)
The kickstarter rachet gears (the reason that I tore this apart) appear
to be in better shape than I expected, I am going to take em over to honda and see what I can find out....

Here is a photo of the starter shaft, #2 shows the teeth of the two gears
that mesh during the "kick" they are in much better shape than I expected, The problem may be that the spring #1 is shot and not keeping
the gears engaged?
also I came up with a way to keep all those tranny parts together so I
could remove them from the case as a unit, zip ties on the ends of the shafts keep the gears from sliding off, helpfull for me cuz I dont like the
looks of all them little pieces!
and lastly,
I completely lost my mind and decided to strip and polish the case,
this is what it looks like after two days of work.

Its a 1985, I think the plastics I have on it may be from another year,
the originals have the blue seat.

What did you use to strip and polish the case? I have been using a wire wheel on one of my dad's drills, but it takes a while to get the paint off. Nice job though.

thank you!, that YZ was my previous project, for an old bike it's a blast
to ride!

Re. The engine case-,I used chemical stripper(nasty stuff), a dremel with the soft sanding buff, and a lot of time. if I had to do this again I would
definately have it bead blasted(mask off all machined areas) and then
finish polish by hand.

Go to autozone and get the aircraft stripper, its in aerosal or liquid for brush on. (aircraft) Its safe to use on aluminum, used it several times now and it works great. I'm also building a 200x from the ground up, if its aluminum it will be polished. Later Dan
