Alright guys, I have a shifter off a 1982, and my frame and everything is a 1982 except the rebuilt engine. The previous owner bought a rebuild engine for $400 because the original bottom end was frozen. I have the original case and shifter shaft/fork that sticks out farther than the 1983 one, and I was wondering if I got a new gasket would I be able to just swap the case and shifter shaft and fork, or atleast just the shifter shaft and fork directly into the 1983 motor, or is there an internal difference? Also if anyone has a 1983 Shifter, Please let me know how much you want for it as that would probably solve my problem. C'mon guys, I got it running but I have no way to shift!

BUMP and I only did this to follow the topic ;)

I bet someone has tried this particular swap.
For lack of better info at this moment,
I'd try the search key and maybe bikebandit.com to see if the part numbers
may match up.
They have exploded diagrams of everything, it seems.

Also, there are shop manuals for free in the world class help
section.
Maybe pictures would help.
Are you thinking it may fit if you cut it?
or it may be exactly the same internally except for the length?

If there is no way it will work the way it is, sounds like it has to come apart anyway, right?
Cross fingers and hope they match perfectly.
Honda changes the strangest things.
But then again, maybe retooling wasn't cost effective in this particular case
and they'll swap out.

Good luck, I know the feeling for sure.

Hopefully being just months apart they only shortened the outer part. I hope that they would swap right over. I am still looking into a 1983 shifter before I change anything internally. I just wish someone had one for sale

They swap over easy. I bought a 1982 engine and the shift shaft from my blown 84 went in no problems, i believe the engine would have to be out of the bike tho.

Call me lazy but it isn't worth it for me to take the engine out to install a longer shaft, I'll just spend 5 bucks on a shift lever for an 83 and install that in 30 seconds.

The shifter isn't going to fix your problem.

The shifter isn't going to fix your problem.

I dont see why not. I need a shifter for a 1983 engine and buying a shifter for a 1983 engine should fix that problem

A 1983 engine in an 82 frame. The shifter shaft is longer for a reason on the first gen R's.

i agree with Fabio^^^^^ the 83 shifter will not clear the 82 frame and will most likely hit the foot peg as well..thats why the 82 shaft is longer its identical on the internal just the shaft where the shifter attaches to the splines is longer... the best way to go is get a shaft and a shifter from a 81-82 motor and swap it in.....or if your good with a welder i guess you could cut up the 84 shifter and fab it up to work and clear the frame....

I guess ill have my neighbor fab something up. He's a machinist.

If you start cobbling now you're gonna end up with a heap of doo-doo. To do it right you'll have to replace the shaft.

Other than the shifter I don't have the fab anything, and My boot is gonna be on that all the time. I don't feel comfortable screwing with the transmission and it would be quicker to just get a shifter welded up for cheap or free

I don't see how a custom welded shift foot lever is gonna ruin a 250r. When I get time and money ill buy a gasket set and swap the fork if it makes you happy
