Okay guys, I am getting a nice 1982 Honda 250r. the guy bought a rebuilt 1983 engine off ebay for $400 and swapped it in. It bolted in fine, but there is no shifter as the 1982 shifter wouldn't fit. The shaft is shorter for the '83 engine and it needs to come out, up, and over the peg. Does anyone know if a stock 1983 shifter would clear the frame?

I seriously doubt it. The shifter shaft is the only difference between the two motors.

Crap. Well the guy has the stock shifter. I'm gonna see about fabbing something up. I think it would be wise to chop it and have it going under the engine case and under the peg, sort of a W shape without the upside down V in the middle... then again if something hits the peg I may find myself going 25 MPH faster into a tree :P

If it goes under the peg it'll more than likely catch on something.

True. I guess I'll fabricate something that goes out and around the case and then over the peg. But of a hassle but 250R's aren't common anymore especially the 1982 style.

Build your own shifter I say, just run it over the peg. Below is a bad idea..
