View Full Version : ATV On Demand to test 1986 Honda ATC250R

ATV On Demand
08-02-2011, 03:34 PM
All of the Trikefest videos are too much to handle. In celebration of our sports history, ATV On Demand will be testing arguably the greatest three wheeler of all time, the 1986 Honda ATC 250R. Rob Ray, and his mostly bone stock ATC 250R are becoming famous on You Tube for his clean machine and willingness to go big.

We will look over the specifications, performance capabilities, and the historic contribution of the machine. If this generates a lot ov views, we would like to do similar tests on other vintage machines. Please share your thoughts.

Thanks
Joe

Glad to hear you guys are into it! Being 30 something, I thought it sounded like a fun project. When it is done, if you guys can spread the word among the three wheeler community it would be greatly appreciated. The more views it drews, the more time we can put into projects like this.

If anyone wants to hit up Haspin this Sunday and participate in some group action shots for the test, you are more then welcome.

FYI - Rob Ray's real name is "Chicken Hawk". Also - will he be there (Haspin) for this event. I think it is great that you are doing this. More publications should follow suit - not only to educate about the beginnings of sport ATV'ing, but the coolness factor with 3 wheelers is off the charts. Kudos ATV on demand!

Here is a video of Rob at Trike Fest. We are going to shoot on the small track and may do a little on the big track, depending on when races end Sunday. We will also do some trail shots.

If anyone was planning on making it up to Haspin Sunday I'm meeting Joe there around noon. We probably won't start filming the riding portion until about 1 or 1:30.

What a cool time at Haspin. Rob was jumping a bunch of things that the guys riding sport quads wouldn't attempt and I never know you could blow through whoops that fast on a trike! Rob's ATC was in surprisingly good shape and his riding will undoubtedly make this a sweet video when it is completed.

I will post a small teaser video in the next few days.

I can't wait for the teaser ;) Had a blast!!!!!! They changed the small track up and it was impossible to hit the big double. They also changed the table into a step-up triple. I can't thank Joe enough for contacting me and wanting to do this. This was a dream of mine since I started riding trikes. And his demands for filming really takes it's toll on a 39 year old  I probably rode more yesterday than I have all year. Thanks again Joe!!!

Ray, er I mean Chicken Hawk, it looks like you are getting better at cornering! Bad ass video! I cannot wait to see the whole deal. I'm glad you were fine after that little spill. Did you run out of travel on the front shocks? It looked like you bottomed them out.

Here's what happened. I had to hit that about 5th at 3/4 throttle. Going that speed, when I hit the ramp, it felt like it was going to pitch my front end high. If you listen, I killed the motor in the air, and when I landed it was like hitting a brick wall!!!

Believe it or not, all it did was bust my headlight shell, destroyed the headlight guard, and just scuffed my rear fenders , didn't even bend the axle though.

We would love to test a TRX250R. First I need to complete the three wheeler test and then I need to find a bone stock TRX.

I'm glad you guys like the video. Having a capable rider with no fear or common sense helps a lot in making it excieint!

So that trike belonged to you guys? Or are you working on a "If you break it, you buy it", kind of basis. Nice riding skills, but I think 250r riding tests were first started about 30 years ago! LOL Any plans on riding any of the real machines? Cagiva, Husky, Tiger, Franks or anything like that? As for originality, I think if you find someone to let you flog their machine, bone stock or not, that it would be ok if it wasn't 100% stock, 'cause how many people are going to let you trash their stock and mint machine? The novelty of what you are doing is cool, but on the other, it's been done before.

Sweet pic Tim. I posted about bottoming out the suspension.

Veal, I think this is pretty cool. Yes, there are plenty of people on this site that were around during the "Hay Days" of trikes, but there are also plenty of people that are fairly new to the addiction. If people are willing to do the reviews and tests again I see nothing but awesomeness.

The machien belonged to the rider. He was offered several rides at Trike Fest by other people already so finding people willing to let us film their machines most likely wont be an issue. Of course, we wouldn't push a machine quite as hard if it didn't belong to us. if the owner was a good rider, they could be featured in the video, if this continues. The machines don't have to be bone stock, just darn close.

You are correct, these machiens were tested 30 years ago. How many people watched I live the 80s, at some point on VH1? Thats a TV show about a bunch of stuff that happened 30 years ago. If there are video tests of vintage machines out there already, please share them so I can enjoy them. It will save hours of editing.

good stuff, i missed this entire thread. as soon as i watched the last jump i knew what happened. landing like that sucks. will throw you over the bars almost every time. glad you were OK. killing the engine in the air is even worse on a 4 stroke if you don't get the clutch back in before you land.

Thanks!! I think what really saved the bike was when I landed it jerked my hand off the clutch and fired the bike back up. When it rolled over, it actually turned my throttle 180 degrees and opened it up fully. I think that's also what saved the axle, and kept it from chasing me.
