Picked up a relatively clean 85 250R on Friday. It has some goodies and some issues. I can't get it to idle. Haven't changed jetting yet. Has an 86 flat slide carb. Clutch issue, won't dissengage when the cluth lever is pulled. Really easy to pull. The clutch arm moves. Has to be the arm itself or somethin in the basket. Haven't pulled it apart yet. Pretty stoke about this trike. Can't wait till ice!!!

86 should be a flat side carb, Sounds like your clutch plates are dry and stuck together. Take the plates out separate them and re-oil then re-install. New clutch springs wouldn't hurt.

As far as the clutch not disengaging, check in between the basket and the clutch hub to see if their is a thrush washer installed. Sounds like the basket and the clutch hub are stuck together.

Pretty sweet. Clean the carb and gas tank out if you haven't already. They were both nasty on my 250R from sitting. How much did you give for it? I'm trying to get an idea what mine is worth. I saw this one on CL and what he was asking for it

I meant to say flat slide, d'oh. I here this is the better of the stock carbs. Just got the R in the basement, I'll have to get them plates out and looked over.

Rob, I gave $900 for it. Got him to that price on the phone.

Nice machine. Love the look of it. The price was even better. Man that is $2000 here for sure. 86 headlight aswell. Sure she's not an 86? Is the brake light mounts welded on. If they are it's an 85 frame.

There is no tail lite atall. No mount or nuthin. So I guess it's reallyt an '86? I tried to run the vin, came up as an un-reconisable Honda atc vin. I changed to 0's to o's and same thing. Makes with the '86 style flat slide carb. I dunno. Yet.

All that really matters for the VIN is the 10th digit. If it's F it's an 85, if it's G it's an 86

10th digit is F so I assume it's an '85?

Nice find I like the 10 inch wheels in the back Im gonna do that on mine when the 10 inch front wheel ever comes in.

It is an 85 frame, the rear gas tank mounts on the frame tell what year it is (fourth pic..left of the rubber wire looms). It has a square cover over the mounts if you will.......The rest of the parts carbs, etc could easily have been changed in the last 20 years.

thats a mint trike, i cant believe you paid $900 for it. that would be easily north of $2000 in my neck of the woods

It's definately an '85 frame, I finally looked at the sticker. Took out the rear axle today and got the trike in the basement. The parts list is growing, I don't think it'll take more than a couple hundred bucks to get it up to snuff. Nothing major, but I haven't addressed the clutch issue yet. Dumdass me put it in the basement before molesting it with the pressure washer. Gotta take it back outside before I open it up. Maybe get inside the cover tomorrow. Also looks like the head gasket is leaking a tad. Definately gonna have to get a full gasketkit, or two to be safe. I dig the 10" rer wheels too, too bad one is trash. Blue labels. Looked like it was run for a bit with the lug nuts loose. You can kinda see in one of the pics.

How is the rear end on it? Mine was toast. I could tell by the mint axle lock nut that it had never been loosened. Is 25 years on the original carrier bearings too long?? The answer is yes, they came out in pieces and junked the carrier also

Got done workin early today so I had some time to tear into the clutch. The clutch lifter lever ( pulled by the clutch cable) is damaged, and the #9, 9/32 ball that is supposed to be between the clutch lifter and clutch lifter rod is missing. The clutch plates and springs are in excellant shape. I guess whoever replaced the clutch forgot about the ball. Called the local Honda place and the clutch lifter lever is not available. Guess I'll scrounge ebay for one.

Rob, the rear end didn't seem to be sloppy at all before I removed the axle. Bearings all move nice and freely. Haven't removed the carrier though.

When I drained the coolant it looked good.
When I drained the tranny oil it too looked good.

At least the previous owner did some maintenance.
