are coils interchangeable?

How interchangeable are coils? Can I use a generic one like this:

or do I need the one specifically for my model of trike?

Well... It would help if you told us what trike you have....

any coil will work the issue is mounting and if it grounds on the mount or has a seperate terminal for grounding

I put a Honda 200es coil on a YTM200e with a little bit of modification and works great I got a yamaha and didn't have the right one so I thought I should try t works great

cdi and points type coils are not 100% interchangeable. The points type need a condenser mounted to them or in the system somewhere.
