Whats the average cost of a complete 185 rebuild? Nothing radical. Looking for a project this winter.;)

sorry to be blund about it but check with your honda dealer for how much parts will cost. You are going to need a gasket kit pistion an rings and it will probably need to be bord. just my .02

Sorry to be blunt also but we can call the Honda dealer for every question, its just easier to post here and interact with other members that have dealt with similar situations. I thought this site was all about sharing experiences and knowledge. Seeing as many of the members have rebuilt their engines then I'm sure someone can chime in on what ballpark an at home rebuild would cost someone.

mine was smoking like crazy and down on power. this was my solution, and it worked great for my 185. you actually send your jug in to them, and the send it back with the rebuild kit.

There is nothing wrong with asking a question now and then but many people have have rebuild there bikes at hom for cheap they have started threads that will answer your question. Have you tryed the search bar at the top of page, alot of your question can be anwers with in a few min if you used the search bar

I would rather pay 300-400 on wiesco,oem,ect and get the cylinder bored out localy in case there are any issues you can take it back.

I suppose those cheap kits are alright for one of those 150-300$ 185's you can find that are pretty beat up.

lol it is kinda funny the clymer manuals say " Valve lapping or grinding the valves is not recommender as the valve face is coated with a special material. Lapping or grinding the valve will remove this surface and will lead to almost instant valve failure. Do not lap or grind the valves. If they are burned or damaged they must be replaced." Its what the books say

It's probably some type of heat resistant coating. I guess new valves probably don't cost all that much so if I were to build a motor I would probably replace them too.

That should do it you supply the elbow grease and nothing major is wrong (crank) If you drop it off at the Honda dealer it will be about triple.

I read that also, yet the Honda Service Manual says it's ok to lap the valves...

hey hill billy funny thing is I live so close to the guy in that you tube video it's not even funny in a later one he posted after finishing the car I know exactly where he pulled over on the highway 16 to meet his friend. lol amazing that you're in Canada and showed me a fellow Montanans you tube site.

As far as valves go. You absoulutely lap them in. As a graduate of factory Honda at MMI I can tell you this for a fact. Stelite is the coating thats on the valves so no don't grind them, but lapping is used even on new valves. As far as cost of a rebuild. I just did mine and paid $20 for a 2mm overbore piston off ebay, $20 for a complete gasket set, I think $25 for new clutch plates and friction disks I then took the cyl and the head to my local Napa machine shop in Mcminnville Or and had then bore the cyl $40 and do a 3 angle valve job $35 using the old valves (the old valves showed no signs of mushrooming and looked pretty good). So for a grand total of my time and about $140.00 it turned out great. Plus the machine shops always do an awesome job at cleaning your old parts. LOOK

Wow, now that's what I'm talking about!!!! Thanks everyone for all the info. I bought a 82 185s last year for $180. It didn't look pretty but it ran, Over the past year I've been buying stuff from ebay and craigslist for it and over the past 2 weeks I finally been sand blasting, powder coating and spray painting it so the next thing is the motor maybe this winter. I will try to post my before and after pics soon.:)

Nice looking 185!!, i got a price to rebuild my 200s,
bore/honeing: 65$
piston,rings,gaskets: $175 total about 250$--- but timing chain, valves and guides are seperate. not bad tho concidering 240 for basics.

Next weekend I'm taking it on it's first official run. I'm going up to Antigo WI for the weekend on the trails. Hopefully I will put on at least 200 miles on it. I made the rack baskets on the back from an old golf cart to hold xtra gear and a 5 gallon gas can.

no with trail pros it deals with the fact they are super heavy and I with my own personal experience have found they tend to get super traction at the most inopportune moments and can almost cause an accident, plus good luck on ever wearing them out they last for ever. but in all reality it's still a tire and if that's what you got run with it. I myself have a set on a trike, came with it and I would like to replace them but have to have the money to do it first.

Not trying to Jack the thread but what rear tire would I run on my 200m? Something I can run on trails, mud etc but won't tear the ass out of my lawn if I'm tooling around the yard with the kids.
