i have all the plastics and stuff just dont have them on, here is the problem, it runs and cranks easy i stuck a 350x carb on it today to crank it cranked first kick!, but has an god awful tap, any known problems with this motor to cause this? should i check vavle clearence first then timing chain? just hope its not carnk or anything, it revs good and no smoke, just loud tapping ticking noise here is a vid to mabey help

get them valves adjusted before you cause damage to something else!

I'm not running the bike, today was the first day I cranked it just to see what it would do, I know better than to run it lol, just wondering the most likely cause lol, I'm leaning toward valves not set right, but could be chain,
Also I'm like between baton rouge and Hammond

Try adjusting the valves before you do anything else.

That is 100% not a 350X frame, may be an XL or XR or other frame modded...........

it's a xl 500 ft section and a 350x rear.though that rear sec looks a little tweeked and can't really see the welds . I'd put a few gussets on it. it's cut the same as mine and the ft sec is spot on with mine.....the forks look to be 3rd gen R. pretty cool though

Lol thanks leviblue, may I ask what's a gusset??, I have all the plastics and tank and stuff I'm itching to ride it lol, I do not like the way the frame is done at the bottom, he'll there is no frame they used the block as part of the frame, I will fab up the rest of the frame when it's running right,
What year xl500 is this any idea? going to buy repair manual tomorrow

82-85 and the book covers both the xl, xr 500 and 600xl. looks to be a 350x rearsub. i looked at your pbucket photos and that is a scary weld. gussets are steel cut to strengthen the frame in weak places. mine was done back in 86 and have pics of it in my photo album on my profile page. does that exh exit in the mid of the rear fender?? cuz that pipe is all sorts of twisty.

Is this a fast motor, does it make a fast trike?

Also is the xl motor the same as the xr? Any differences?
the motors are basically the same my 500x is the xl frame with no bottom im going to make a steel skid plate that bolts the front and back of the frame together
