View Full Version : A Couple Of Stray ATC 70's Followed Me Home Tonight
I found these poor neglected little fellas on Craigslist tonight and decided since the price was right I'd give them a new home.
Nothing special and they both need a lot of work, but there a pretty good foundation. The one with the blue seat is in the best shape and all it needs is a carb cleaning, oil change, throttle cable, brake cable, and reseal the wheels and it will be a runner.
My plan for it is to see if my 5 year old daughter likes it once running, then make it pink and white for her just like she asked. The other one I really don't know what I'm going to do with it but it came as part of the package.

Looks good. Nice little project.. Now build the other one for yourself. ;)
I've thought about it. I might just hang it from the rafters until I'm ready to do something with it.

Be really careful, they have a habit of multiplying in the garage.

I see two ...and that usually means that you will accidentally have a race before long .

Its scary how much guys like us think alike! First thing I did last night was look up the Lifan bigger engine swaps.

the older one is a 3 speed. alot of guys like the 3 speeds better. hopefully your daughter will dig it, then you will end up fixing the other for yourself. i hear there a hoot to ride!! i have 2, but they are not running, and awaiting some love. my son is 4, so i really got to get on it!! be perfect for him right now!!

Wow, I didn't know that. I really don't know much about these things other than I think the one with the blue seat is an '83 and the other is a '81 or '82, I think. I have to pull all of the wheels apart because they hold air for about 15 seconds.
Me and my Daughter sat on them this morning and made engine noises while my wife just laughed and shook her head. Its going to be fun I can't wait.
According to the VIN's the blue seat bike is an '83 and the black seat bike is an '82.

Lifan engines, Heck, they'll fit a laydown 200x engine!!!

School me, I'm ATC 70 illiterate. I'll do the research, but if I'm picking up what your putting down, the 200x engine will lay down?
Edit: Looks like there is more to it than just laying down a 200x engine. That would be cool but I'm not sure I like these things that much just yet.

I think the 82-85 are a 4 speed also the 85 is a up shift. The 78-81 is a 3 speed. The 3 speeds are great in certain situations. When we race at my house my buddies 81 atc70 beats me. He can run 2nd gear wide open the whole time as I have to shift on the straight away, then down shift in the turn. On the longer track my 4 speed seems to out do his.
They are very addicting and before you know it you will have both running good and be looking for more.
Aldo you got to get your sons up and running. He will love it. My son started on his 83 atc70 when he was 3. Hes 8 now and rips on it really well. Here is a little vid I took. Sorry for the angle and quality, I took it with my phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9NMmtGdQFQ
lol, you guys are nuts.... :beer

Are you in for a suprise. They are fun. They don't take up much room. They don't start out very expensive. Then, once you are hooked is when it gets crazy. Big lifan engines. Custom paint jobs and custom seats. Fiberglass fenders and tanks. Then it goes for suspension 70s. Laydown 200x engines. You can really tie up some time and money into them. Some guys race them on one level or another. I've seen people buy 70s from others that say their kids have outgrown them and these are being purchased by adults who are going to ride them harder and put more money into them when they were new! LOL It can get as crazy as you want to spend money! Welcome to the insanity.
Veal, your right I am already hooked. I just ordered the parts I think it will take to get my daughters up and running and then went on day dreaming about what I'm going to do to the '82. But I promise it will have to wait until my R is finished. I might just get it running an play with it then get stupid.

Some of the best races I've been in were on a 70. Nothing like four 200lb 30 yr olds racing around the garage/house figure 8 track on 2.75 hp motors built for 7 yr olds.

Now you guys are catching on to the idea. Now start thinking along the lines of a 125 lifan in the frame and you will be having some serious fun.

I have 2 atc70's I play with. One is my xmas 70 the other is a red 83 that is piped. I have a 85 thats all there minus the motor. I bought it just for my Lifan build. Going to go with the 4 speed 1 down 3 up manual clutch model. Should be a blast when its done.
Some parts for the '83 should be in within the next few days and a buddy of mine really wants the '82 for his son, so he might bail me out of going crazy with that one.
