I bought a big red 84 and the front forks are totally shot and was thinking if I could find a set of 200x or 250r forks and put them on the big red looked around on the internet and found this picture and it looks possible? What do you guys think??

I am in the same boat. my 84 big red has the front shocks extended all the way out and bolted. I have a 200x frame with good front end I would like to try later but right now I have to build the top end on the big red.

I believe they are not directly interchangeable. That doesn't mean that it can't be done though. Don't quote me on this, but the 200x, 250r, and 350x forks share the same headset specs whereas all the utility bikes share another. I do know first hand that a BR fork will bolt straight into a 90/110, just have to grind off the steering stop.

sorry don't want to hijack, but the BR forks just swap in? cutting the steering stops is all? i've been looking for the 185-200 forks for my 125m, and will have cut/reweld the steering stops from what i understand for them. how would a BR fork just bolt in with out steering stops? i know where i can find a BR fork, but i have a dent/rust free original tank i don't want to ruin.

Crap, I typed out a reply and for some reason it logged me out and wouldn't let me post it.

The 110 frame that I have has a tab on the front of the neck for the steering stops to hit that interferes with the lower triple on the BR forks so I ground it off. My forks will hit the tank now but my tank is an ugly little dirtbike tank anyways lol. A person could weld a new tab on where its needed to hit the pins on the BR fork though. Other than that, same stem length, dia., bearing races and everything.

As for the OP, a different set of roller bearings could accomodate any diff in stem dia. and spacer on the bottom could compensate if the x/r forks have a longer stem. I'm sure it is possible to do, just might have to get a little creative.:wondering

I don't know what part of Alabama you are from but, if you are from around Mobile (eastern shore), I have a proposal for you. I have 2 sets of front shocks for a 1985 Big Red 250 es. If you rebuild one set for me (with me buying the parts), I will give you the other set. As far as I know, neither set has ever been taken apart and appears to be rebuild able.

Are the forks shot, as in there is no bounce to it? You could just replace the dampers in them, that's what I did. Mine were locked up and frozen. They don't sell the springs anymore, so if you have a busted spring, somewhat SOL to get OEM replacements.

the shocks were streched out to their longest point of travel and some fool drilled a hole and bolted them in place. I do have extra set of springs from a 200e but the struts are toast.and a complete front end off a 200x

I think it gives the big red a really sporty look
