Wow, what a forum! I expect I will be on this quite often for a while. i am watching this thread to see if it will help me...forgive me if it takes me a little time to learn forum-etiquette, I have not actually posted before.
My son brought home a 1984 200X. How nice of him. He brings me all kinds of lifetime projects. This trike looks pretty rough but I think it would be fun as h__ if we can get it going. He says he started it up before he bought it from this guy. The jerk he bought it from didn't tell him the gas had turned to sludge...but that's another story (I think we are cleaned up good with the carb, lines, tank and petcock/screen).
When he brought it home he went to start it again and nothing; Zero, nada, nothing. No Spark! We started at plug (plug is good) and worked backward. I have no parts to swap with to troubleshoot...what I do have is a multi-meter.
I have a Clymer manual and metered the coil and CDI...I think I did it right and these both MIGHT be OK. I proceeded to the stator. On the stator 'lighting' coil, I got continuity to ground like the book says I should. On the 'exciter' coil, whatever that is, black/red to ground I am supposed to read 100 to 400 ohms or something like that. I got zero movement on the meter...like an open...so I guess that is bad thing, yes? ...must be a bad stator??? I have never swapped out a stator, but it doesn't look that bad. I just hate to start putting out the bucks if I am metering this all wrong.
If any of you have done this, let me know if you have any tips. Do I replace the whole stator or just order the coils? Any advice or info would be appreciated.
Looks like it would be a thrill ride if we can get this thing going! Thanks!
