83 Honda 200E rear wheels locked up???

I have a 1983 atc 200e, bought it as a project and the tires were completely flat, so it would not roll. now I have replaced the tires, it is still locked up, it seems like the transmission is going into neutral, but the mark is worn off the case, so I dont know what the red arrow is supposed to point to? any help would be appreciated.

I just got a 200e and i didnt know that all the way at the top was neutral as i was used to dirt bikes and stuff where you up to gear up so that may be your problem if you didnt know that because it sure confused the hell outta me. Aha good luck man.

have you removed the chain case to determine that its not bound up in there, and all looks normal? also make sure the high low lever is engaged in one position or the other

I used to build transmissions for a living and was convinced that my gearbox was toasted.

Turned out someone STOMPED on the brakes and locked them into a new range of rust
so NOthing would move.

Sloppy chain flipped on the front sprocket? (aldo)

as stated above by DrJoe, the back brakes could be locked up. find where the cable goes to the rear brake drum. take a pair of channel locks and see if the lever (on the drum) operates freely. also the make sure its in Neutral. on a 200E neutral is all the way up. 5th is all the way down. let us know how the brake lever on the drum moves, if at all. :beer

I checked the back brake, and the foot cable is seized, so I backed off the adjuster to relieve the tension and the wheels are still locked. I have the shifter all the way up and I tried the hi-lo range switch in both positions. still locked up

Even if motor is in gear, you should be able to turn the tires over (try putting it in 5th, with the plugged pulled out), if its still locked up, chances are it's in the rear brakes, like Tuff and DR joe said.....you'll need to pull off the cover and get those frozen brake shoes out...that style in notorious for locking up!!

yeah, thats my next move, I'm gonna pull the chain cover and see how that looks, then pull the drum off and check the shoes, I'll let you guys know.

Get the BIG HAMMER cause ou are gonna need it. I wish I had taken pics of my 200M when I took the rear brakes apart. There was dried, hard mud in the entire drum. I had to chip it out with a screwdriver. It looked like it had been parked in a muddy pond at some time. The guy I bought it from said he recovered it abandoned from a rental property that his dad owned. It would run fine, stopping was a whole nother issue. Be ready to replace the seals and all on the rear end when you take it apart. I would suggest going ahead and buying them before you open it up. It is a good investment.

Take the chain off. It's a good bet that it's rusted and/or broken and bound up between one of the sprockets and something.

If you get the chain off and the rear axle still won't turn, remove the brake shoes.

If you get the brake shoes off and the rear axle still won't turn, replace the bearings.
