What year is your bike ? If its a 1983 they are known for blowing CDI's out and their a bit hard to find .

wirebrush the electrical connections starting with the green wire terminal that screws to the primary coil. I have revived many 185's and 200's that had no spark just by cleaning the connections.
If you need a manual, I am pretty sure you can download it by right clicking on this link and choosing SAVE LINK AS:
Honda 200ES Big Red 1984 Service Manual (http://72.52.143.80/~trikes/Manuals/ATC%20manuals/Honda%20200ES%20Big%20Red%201984%20CD.pdf)

yes, been there.
Had a good running one parked right next to the misbehaving (no or random spark) one.
I had the absolute LUXury of swapping known working parts back and forth.
That s.o.b. would not give up the secret.
cdi? nope, coil? nope etc e etc etc
Gave up, kicked a tire and took the battery to put in another machine.
For some morbid reason , I pulled the rope and it fired INstantly.
There is something different between electric start and ppull start spark circuits.
I've heard stories where people bought new wire harnesses out of sheer frustration and
when the trikes started acting normally, they almost all admit that it works simply because....
by changing the harness, they HAD to go thru, each and every connection.
grounds grounds grounds.
coil to frame, rustdust under the cover that says "cdi",
if you want your eyes to go fuzzy, memorize the wire diagram.
Pretty sure the ground that feeds the kill switch also had a ground necessary for the cdi to work.
Now if yer really lucky, nip the last tiny bit off the plug wire and rescrew on the sparkplug cap, or betteryet, unscrew that cap, nip the last tiny bit of wire to get to some fresh wire and see if that will throw spark directly from the wire to ground .
DEFinitely let us know what you find.

Wow, what a forum! I expect I will be on this quite often for a while. i am watching this thread to see if it will help me...
My son brought home a 200X. How nice of him. He says he started it before he bought it. The jerk he bought it from didn't tell him the gas had turned to sludge...but that's another story (I think we are cleaned up good with the carb, lines, tank and petcock/screen). When he brought it home he went to start it again and got no spark. Zero, nada, nothing. We started at plug (plug is good) and worked backward. I have no parts to swap with to troubleshoot...anything we do is gonna cost us. I have a Clymer manual and metered the coil and CDI..I think I did it right and these both MIGHT be OK. I proceded to the stator. On the stator 'lighting' coil, I got continuity to ground like the book says I should. On the 'excitor' coil, whatever that is, black/red to ground I am supposed to read 100 to 400 ohms or something like that. I got zero movement on the meter...like an open...so I guess that is a start...must be a bad stator??? I have never swapped out a stator, but it doesn't look that bad. I just hate to start putting out the bucks if I am metering this all wrong.
If any of you have done this, let me know if you have any tips. Do I replace the whole stator or just order the coils? Any advice or info would be appreciated.
Looks like it would be a thrill ride if we can get this thing going!

okay so this is the scoop, i couldnt get the cdi cover off (the screws broke my screwdriver!!!) and i couldnt reach the right bolt with a socket, so i took the the spark plug cord thingy (sorry i dont know the name) and used a tooth brush on that, sure enough, started right up and now it runs better then before then before! now onto fixing the brakes... thanks for the help guys!

Good for you dude! Brakes are good thing to have too (maybe).
Don't you guys forget about me and my stator...or do you suggest I post on the other groups too & see what I get?
