I was wondering how I can tell if my Tri Z is running too hot? After about 8 to 10 minutes of idling and reving the motor is almost too hot to touch.
Its this normal. My quadzilla stays alot cooler thats why I am asking.
How would I know if its running too hot?
What is the normal operating temp?
How hot to the touch should the cylnder of a liquid cooled motor be?
Thanks,
Darius

My pipe on my 250R is usually to hot to tuch after several minutes of riding, but the cylinder itself is cool enough to change a plug. They should run cool, 2 strokes can detonate very easily. I think Tri-Z's have thermostats, maybe you shoudl change it, or maybe your running lean in your jetting.

i could run my Z for a while, and the jug would be warm, but not screaming hot. I'd check your fluid level as well as plug. If you aren't moving while you're revving it up that could be the cause, no airflow through the rads.

I just took off the water pump cover and to my amazement the freak'in impeller is plastic!! Even worse there is no slot to makes sure it locks into the shaft! The thing was melted around the shaft so when the shaft spins the impeller won't even move!!
I think I figured out the trouble...good thing I listened to my gut feelings about the heat of the motor. I know liquid cooled motors don't run to hot to touch.
Second issue: What do or did you have around the clutch cable where it should clamp into the case? I just have a "U" shaped slot. The clutch cable has a plastic fitting that fits in there but it always slips out. Is there anything missing?
How do you keep yours from coming out?

Yes Darius the impellers are plastic and are infamous for blowing up. But you are wrong about nothing to lock it in, there is a pin that goes through the impeller, a gear that locks onto it, and a c-clip on the end to hold it into place. As far as the clutch cable goes, there is a small slot between that u-shaped groove and the case, there is supposed to be a metal piece on the clutch cable that slides into that metal groove and keeps the cable there. If/when you take the ride side cover off, be careful not to ruin the gasket because a new one costs 15 bucks. That gets expensive time after time. I'll try to get some pics of how the clutch cable goes when I get my digicam back.

Here are some pics of the impeller...
is yours different?
Mine has no places for a pin or clip. Rather it just looks like the plastic impeller slips on the steel shaft. The steel shaft has a knurled surface but no slots.

350X's run very very hot. That's an air cooled motor by the way they run hot anyway.

the impeller and shaft are supposed to be one piece, you should only be able to remove it by removing the clutch side case.then remove the clip off the shaft and pull the impeller through the case.
