I am looking to buy a nice original 1983 185 for the same price I can get a 1982 185 with a 200s engine in it...I am looking to do a few mods (200x carb) Can you feel a differance in power between the 2? What about top speed?

...What engine is "best?"

I heard the 185 is faster than the 200?

I think the only difference is the top ends. I also heard somewhere the 185s is faster then 200s. ill go see what i can dig up.

I dont think so... and yea the only difference is the top ends so idk how the 185s outruns the 200s. interesting...

I'd put 50 bucks down that no stock 185s would beat my 200S. I've rode the 185, and I've rode a stock 200S, and the 185 feels similar, but not completely as fast. You have to remember that there's only 15cc's worth of difference between the two though. That's not much. The 185 has the weight/power advantage though.

lol its a 200s and a 185s not really a big woot which goes faster...

So since they are both about the same power engine, I will probally just pick the one in better shape...
The 185s has better tires and racks and looks all original where as the 200 (in a 81' 185s frame) looks a litte more
peiced together but seemed to have a lot of power!...Ill be trying out the 185s in the am...also the 185 has front shocks.
They are asking $375 for each...

Actually, it's only 12cc's. The 185s was 180cc and 200s is 192cc. Not much difference at all. In my admittedly unscientific tests a few years ago, my 200s outran my buddy's 185s, but only at the very top end. Could have been a lot of reasons for this though. Overall, they're about the same.

they are pretty close to the same , the difference would amount to the history and care given to each, I would probably go with the 83 the little bit of front susp. is nice and racks are real handy , they did make a 185 that had 9 inch wheels 1980-81 not a s model was bigger frame and tires , also shifted down instead of up , you could always put a 200x top end and carb aftermarket exhoust to get more power..

My plan is to put a 200x carb on one of them for a little more go...Ill have one or the other at home tomorrow :)

My buddy has both a stock 185s and a stock 200s. His 185 is noticeably more peppy than his 200 and will beat it hands down in a race. Possibly his 200 is just more tired out, or the carb isn't tuned quite right, or the 185 frame is lighter, but in my experience the 185 is plenty powerful. Post pictures when you get your new machine!

Well I just got home from trying the 185s and it a pig compared to the 185s with a 200s engine I tried yesterday...That 200s engine ran STRONG :wondering! This 185s was ok...it could have been slow and rode like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro from the 26" mud tires on the back!! The 185s has been beat hard and made the 200s (185s) I tried yesterday seem like a great deal...Again the power of that 185s with the 200s engine was impressive! :D

Did honda make a non S 185? Whats the dif?

Yes - in 1980 the BIG HOSS trike was the ATC185 (non S model) It was big - the same size as the 1981- 1983 ATC200 (also non-S models)- 25" tires and larger frame than the later model 1981-1983 ATC185S (which is the same size as a 1984 - 1986 ATC200S)

Basically here is how it went:

1980 - ATC185 = large
1981 - 1982 ATC200 = large
1981 - 1982 ATC185S = smaller
1983 - ATC200 = large - update with front suspension
1983 - ATC185S = smaller - update with front suspension
1984 - 1986 ATC200S= smaller (no more larger model)

The 185 motor made slightly more horsepower (like less than 1 more HP) but the 200 made more torque. Any comparison made after about 1990 would not be very good considering worn out motors and parts. I have had very fast and very slow 185 and 200 models - depending on how abused they were. I currently have a very low hour ATC185 and it has good power - btu the gearing is higher, so my ATC185S feels faster. Weight difference in machines is minimal
ATC200 ATC185 = Approx 299#
ATC185S ATC200S = Approx 270#

Now with only 12 - 14 HP - you have to take rider weight into consideration - also tires are a factor, a big heavy Trail-Pro will be much more weight to turn than a stock knobby.

You could also install an xr 200 piston which pumps up the compression

I picked up the 1981 185s framed 200 today! I think it was setup to ice race :naughty: It's fast compared to the 110 thats for sure :) ...This thing is a little beast! ...it came with new cheng shin? tires on it and the brakes are great. Its the tightest riding trike I have ever ridden...no shakes, smoke, wabbles or noises or vibes ect...Only issuse is it does not want to idle, It needs a little thumb to idle... not sure why but it could just be the idle screw?

I believe the heads are different. The 200X does not have a decompresser and it was a higher compression ratio (9.6 to 1) the 185 is (8.0 to 1). So if you just put a 200x topend on it you wouldn't be able to pull it over you would having to bumb start it and most likly you would have to redue your clutch to hold the power.
Just to bring it back up the 185 may be alittle fast then the 200cc bike because all the 200cc expect the 200x all have lower compression ratio then the 185s. 200cc have (7.6 to 1)compression ratio

the 185 has 8:1 c/r and is 180cc. the 200 has 7.8:1 c/r and is 192cc. the 185s is quicker because the frame was shorter and has about 30lbs less to carry around so it was quicker. many parts will swap between the 185/200s,x,xr200. the xr 200 piston has a bit more compression and makes the engine a 198cc vs the other 200 atcs that are 192cc. the cam on the 200x and xr200 have more lift that the 185/200s with the xr having the most.

So thats why this thing feels kinda quick!...its a 200s engine in a 185s frame...Its a stout little beast...I may be keeping this one for a little while :D

I have a semi custom 185 and deal with a lot of 185 and 200 parts bikes and never really could keep all the differences straight. That is the best quick summary I have ever read. I think I may print that and hang it over the work bench till I get it in memory. Thanks!

that was very interesting ,and yes the 185 witha 200x head is a bump start ,start on the hill and park on the hill so starting downhill but it is fast .the pullstart will work but you gotta be ready for it also breacks the rope pretty reguler

Why is this? Is the 200x head so smaller cc's that it bumps the compression up that high? I thought the chamber was about the same, just no decompression device. I have never used the decompression lever on any pull start trike. I am not understanding the difficulty in pull roping a 185/200x engine.

This was with a stock pistion and new rings.

When I was a kid (the was in 1982-1986) my neighbor had a 185s and I had a 125m. I just picked up a nice 200s and i've become a fanatic/expert on these bikes. Here is a complete list of the main differences in 1983:

Engine size: 185s 180cc - 200s 192cc
Compression ratio: 185s 8:1 - 200s 7.8:1
Length: 185s 67.7" - 200s 72.4"
Width: 185s 39.4" - 200s 42.5"
Height: 185s 38.5" - 200s 39.6"
Wheelbase: 185s 44.1" - 200s 46.9"
Seat height: 185s 26.2" - 200s 272"
Ground clearance: 185s 4.7" - 200s 4.9"
Tires: 185s 22x11.8 - 200s 25x12.8
Dry weight: 185s 270.1 - 200s 299.9
Horsepower: 185s 13@5,500rpm - 200s 13.5@7000rpm
Torque (ft-lbs): 185s 9.26@5,500rpm - 200s 11@6000 rpm

I had asked this very same question a while ago and no one answered me:wondering I've got the answer i was looking for now. and if I may side track the conversation for a bit; I know it's kinda vague how do yo think my bike Klt 185 compares against the competition in stock for stock engine performance judging by the data sheets given?

Displacement 182cc
Bore x Stroke 66 x 53.2 mm
Compression ratio 9.5 to 1

LMAO!!! Hahaha I know huh... there both little pingers... But yeah my dads first trike after like 25 years was a 200s.. I rode it but can only compare it to my old 200x. The bikes run good, I think I rode a 185 before.. You would think the 200s would get up a bit faster..

always go with the cleaner machine if they are priced the same engine mods are easy on these things, its replaceing the broken and or missing stuff that will kill your wallet.
