just found my first project bought a 1984 atc 70 the thing has been in storage for a long time have repalced all tires, I cannot get thing to spark bought new plug. maybe its the coil is there a way to test this before i order a new one

I all but gaurantee it will need new points, they go bad, and filing them doesnt work. And yes check the grounds. Search on here there is a free repair manual you can download. But I bet if you replace the pionts it will get spark. I do not see coils go bad often.

Had the same issue with mines, turns out it was the points.

A good way to tell if the coil is bad is hook up a voltmeter or ohm meter to the lead going into the coil. If you have a reading when you pull the pull start it may be the coil. Also, if the coil has any external cracks could indicate a bad coil. I would download a manual from here, check to make sure that your kill switch is connected properly and go that route. I do agree with Blue27 that it is more than likely the points. Good luck and post some pics.
