Your nut is a POS and your missing the collar that slips over that clip or thats an 86 nut thats all beat up and won't slide over the clip...... It's probably rusted up because it looks like someone chewed on it with a pipe wrench trying to move it. It's LH threads and seems to be bottomed to the left, instead of the right.

it is an 86 that the p/o must have been chewing on it.....I know it is reverse threads but even when I turn it in the correct direction I can only get the gap down to about 1/8".....Just trying to find out what I need.....new nut?? new collar???.....Thanks....Paul

IF you look at the manual you can see what needs to be done. If it won't turn, your threads are likely chewed too.

the nut will turn....how much travel should the nut have before it is all the way off???

It should have plenty of travel..... Take it all apart, clean it with a wire wheel, grease it and re-install it. They get very rusty and it limits how much they move.

There is a guy "DannyM44" I believe?? that sells brand new nut assemblies on EBAY for 25$. I have a couple stashed away, you cannot beat the price!
