my 85 R is blowing oil out of the silencer. is it normal?

It's either running really rich, or your mixing it with too much premix. Have you fouled any plugs? Do you have any bogs in the rev range? Have you pulled your plug and checked it for color?
Your silencer or muffler may need repacked as well. It may be full of spooge..

I think a bad crank seal can cause this too.

If it was a thumper, yes. Most two strokes can have any excess out coming out the silencer, listen to Dcreel, he knows what he's talking about.
And Dcreel, if ANY pipe is fool of spooge, and you didn't know it, I'd be putting some locks on some doors!
