I got this big red from my brother who was not using it

I changed all the oils cleaned out the the gas tank and put a new battery in and changed the engine fuz that for some reason had blown.

I would crank over but not start. Or if it did it was sputtering and back fireing.

I got a complet carburator rebuilt kit and rebuilt the carburator. After that it started perfectly and i have been using it for the past 2 weeks without issue.

Yesterday I tried to start it but battery was dead?? kick started it no problem drove it to the grarage to put the charger on. When i whent to started it after that I got a massive back fire. It cranks over perfectly and some time you get the hint that it wants to start but it does not. I do get sparks from the plug. I tried quick start.. but got no results? any ideal? Points issue? Timing issue? Any help as to where to start looking would be appreciated.

It might have jumped the timing chain after the backfire. Get a manual if you don't have one and see how to check the timing. Also check valve adjustments. Check all your electrical connections/ground. Your machine has a CDI ignition so no points. Good luck.

Had an 85 that ran great, then backfire and nothing. Replaced CDI, worked perfectly.

would a broken CDI explain the un charged Battery? is the voltage regulartor / rectefier built in to the CDI?

No,2 different parts, complete different jobs. Put a NEW spark plug in and go ride.

why would a new battery go dead?

Was the key off and Out?
Could the regulator leak back?
How else could voltage drain?
Did you leave the radio on?
(kidding)
Turn it off and disconnect the battery and check across with volt meter.

does your neutral light come on when the battery works?

As you know, it will run and start without a battery and even if you cut all the ignition key wires.

A backfire CAN kick the engine and chain/tensioner backwards but I can't imagine
it throwing off unless it was loose to start with.

could be just a plug like atc007 said.

we all have our fingers crossed for the ez stuff.

did you turn the gas off?

did the cyl fill with fuel?
plug wet?

spin it with the plug out, see if it spits, check for spark.
and start over with a tiny spritz of ether of try to start it normally.

ok Cool I checked the spark plug before and it did spark. but A per atc007 I checked again and found that if i keept cranking afte about 10 second it stoped sparking and would only spark intermitently after. Changed the plug and it started right away. the only thing is the plug that was no good was in good color and less then 3 weeks old.?

Yup the key was out an ignition off. When i put the key in the neutural ligth comes on. battery is good had it checked for amps and voltage and it is up to spec no defect there. I have a volt meter butttt... don't realy know how to use it.

I belive the radio was an option and my brother opted for an 8 track instend when he bought it. lol just kidding
