Went on the motorsports dealers recommendation on 80w oil for my 250r's transmission fluid (shoulda asked here) anyways I now know I am supposed to use 10-40, I have ridden it once with the new fluid in there, and the clutch was groaning when I let it out for first, anyways it still is shifting fine as well as the clutch is working properly, but anyone know how much damage I did? I really don't want to take the thing apart to look. I am going to drain it this morning and put the right oil in, and I only rode the thing for about 2 hours, so whats everyone think?

The CR 250 calls for hondaline 80w transmission fluid so there is nothing wrong with the oil you put in

It'll be fine. Get your self a nice motorcycle oil, the kind with additives for the wet clutches. You'll like them alot.

Myself, I would only use the straight 80w if I was racing. And I would use the Honda stuff. For trail or other every day riding, 10w-40. Its what my Honda service manual calls for. I doubt you hurt anything, but be careful what some shops may tell you. My father-in-law had a local shop "technician" tell him he could use pretty much any oil in a quad with wet clutches. Made no mention of making sure the product was wet clutch safe....

You can run automatic transmission fluid in your crankcase... Some people might disagree, but you have to think... What is in an automatic transmission? Bearings, clutches, and gears... What is in the crankcase of a 250r engine? Bearings, clutches, and gears..... I ran ATF in my 250r for years it works great my clutch never slipped or wore out, but it gets dirty fast. If you run ATF change it after every 2 hard all day rides and your engine will be happy!

Do you realize that they use 80 weight for gearboxes?

The 80 weight you buy at your local Advance Auto is different than the 80 weight that they sell for performance machines at Dealerships and ATV repair shops. The 80w that is designed for your 250r is similar to straight 30 weight oil. By putting 10-40 in it, you did nothing bad at all.

In fact had you gone down and bought 80w gear oil and put it in your motor, you might have really hurt something.

Ive ran belray gearsaver 80w in all my 2 stroke critters for the last ten yrs, and ran golden spectro 80w for 8 yrs before that. Never had a problem. Ive also never had a clutch issue.

Agreed, auto-trannies do have clutch packs in them. But my only reservation about running ATF compared to factory recommended 10w-40 is that ATF seems quite a bit thinner to me. But I dont doubt its wet clutch safe

I also have been using the same stuff with now issues. Just paid $5.79 per quart for 10 quarts last weekend.... Wheeler servicing time!
