I want the front of my '85 200X shiny! Any tricks? What do you do and use?

If I remember correctly, the '85 200X's triple clamps had a natural aluminum finish with a clear coat. To make them really shine, you'll need to remove them, strip the clear coat, and sand them smooth. Depending on how rough the aluminum casting is will determine what grit sandpaper you should start out with. Then, you'll need to gradually increase the grit on the sandpaper until they're nice & smooth. For a decent shine you'll need to end up with at least 1000 grit. For a chrome-like shine you're looking at 3000 grit minimum. If you have a polishing wheel on a bench grinder, you can use some polisher's rouge to do the final polishing. If not, Mother's polish is what I prefer. It's a lot of work, but nothing comes easy, unless you want to send them out to someone else to be polished. Good luck!

Start with 400 grit wet sandpaper and work your way up to 2000 or 3000 grit sandpaper (depending on how patient you are :) ) and then polish the crap out of them with Mothers Aluminum polish.

I don't...just hit it with a little mothers polish after a wash and it's good to go. The clear coat is what will give the aluminum that yellowed color as it ages.
