Slipping?

Was out riding yesterday, haulin in 5th and it sounded like my chain came loose, and I lost power to the wheels, as if it had come loose. I looked down and the chain was still on. I was able to take off at low throttle, but when i nail it, it makes this rattling sound and it's slipping (power not beeing transfered to the wheels). Does not feel like a clutch problem. It feels like it might be coming from behind the front sproket. :wondering
any help appriciated.

Your tranny output shaft might be stripped .

check your hubs, could be bad splines. happened to be my problem one time. could very well be yours too. if not, then you eliminated one thing to check.

When I got my 250sx, one of the hubs was worn completely smooth. You'd be lucky if it was that rather than something in the engine. Of course, having both hubs strip out at the same time seems like it would be pretty rare, but who knows?

So sitting at idle, in gear, clutch engaged nothing is turning. Looking at the output shaft at the front sprocket..the nut isn't spinning, nor the chain...etc. Cause that would make a fair bit of noise and be obvious.

Therefore. Pull the side cover and check the clutch, if not pull the engine and split the transmission..

"Does not feel like a clutch problem" I'd check things in this order.

Sprockets, make sure they aren't free wheeling. The color of your tranny fluid - give you an idea of clutches. Hubs- doubtful, but possible, They would both have to give at once very unlikely. If 1 gave, youd do circles :)

The rattling sound, That can be a spun sprocket on the splines, might need a new sprocket, and possibly output shaft. At low speeds, not much force is transfers, and the splines can hold on, more power and they will slip. it would make a nice rattle sound.

If they are both junk from killing each other - weld that sprocket into place!, just cut it off and replace both parts when the sprocket is dead.

pulled the drive sprocket cover. loosened the sprocket nut which took no pressure at all and the sproket fell off. the bearing on the shaft was out about a 1/4". and there was some small metal shavings. i'm thinking the nut had come loose on its own and the sprocket was spinning on the end of the shaft. I had to hammer the sprocket back onto the shaft which is another thing that makes me think it must have been loose in the first place. haven't had a chance to test it out but i'll post the outcome this weekend.

Its all better now. the sprocket must have been loose. problem is gone.

Dont forget to lock-tite the bolts on the front sprocket, it should help keep it from happening again
