no, they are not. they are close but not the same. on the 84-84 kx's are close to the 84-85 kxt and the 85-86 kx are close to the 86-87 kxt. i had a 86 kx in my tecate and changed it back to a kxt engine. the tranny is just to far out of range,

what do you mean 'out of range'....

Out of range... Normally the gearbox/tranny ratios are different for dirtbike motors due to the larger diameter rear tire on a dirtbike and lighter weight vs a heavier atv with smaller diameter tires.
Alot of motor parts will interchange between the KX and KXT depending on the year. For the 1st gen. KXT 84-85 the KX cylinder is desireable. The 86/87 KXT used the same cylinder as the KX so no gain there.

I'm guessing I have KX engine in my 86 T3 since the serial number on the engine starts with KX250. I have another question I also think I have the KX250 head pipe does anyone have the KXT250 head pipe?

Probably not. allot of the parts are the exact same as KX250. Including the engine cases. All the engine serial numbers are KX. As for the headpipe being different, an 86 KX250 pipe needs a couple mods to fit a Tecate. 200xbasket has done this pipe swap.
