Loosen all the bolts, wiggle, your driveshaft has a spring in it which will compress right off the splines, just don't give up! But why pull it for a top end??

dont you have to have the engine off to be able to pull the head off and cylinder to change the rings?

No you don't,take the cylinder head top off, then there's 4 bolts inside the head, undo those and the other bolts on the outside and the head comes off. Then you can undo 4 more bolts at the bottom of the cylinder jug and then it comes off too.I may have missed a step but that is pretty much it.

Simple, pay attention as you tear it apart! T on the flywheel,2 lines on the cam sprocket, lay level w head. Valves at .003-.004.

What's the deal on not dropping the timing chain?
I've heard that the chain can be changed with the engine in the
frame too.

Old wives tail, even if you do drop the chain. Fish it back up with a pen magnet, no biggy at all! Even if it's so bad it falls off the crank sprocket, fish it around till you get it back on. And yes,you can def do it in the frame also. The older 185's and 200's are the only ones you have to pull the motor on to work on the top ends.

I just wrap wire around the cam chain then wrap the other end around the frame so I don't have to fish it out lol.

It might be a pain when you try to get the head out cause its a tight fit against the frame when removing so if you need help come here.

Yeah, theres not a millimeter to spare, some machines you have to have the dowels down the studs,,it's TIGHT in there, but It will come out.

that is exactly where i am on my build right now. i cant get the head off because of the tight fit. if you guys say it will come off then i know it will. As atc007 said i do have 1 dowel that is connected to the head so i guess i will pop it off so it can slide down.

Hone your cylinder ,a nice fresh cross hatch for your rings to seat into. A valve job is highly recommended while it's down. Good luck!!
