My friend has a titled xl600 frame that's almost a roller, has no engine or wheels but does have its other components, obviously for a really good price if not free. I'm pretty sure a 350x or 200x front end will bolt on and I would just have to fab up a swing arm. Obviously my engine choices would be pretty great because of the size of the 600 engine cradle. My question would be will Pennsylvania bust my balls because it's been converted into a trike? Anybody think it would be a bad idea, other than the fact of the solid axle? Should I find a smaller bike and use a an atc200's components? I like enduro's but I just want something different, I don't need suspension either. I'm not looking to build a bike that's going cross country I am just looking to build something to get to a few local trail spots that I can't bring a trike on the back of the truck to.

I dont see how they could look at it any different than a trike conversion on a Harley or a Goldwing. The live axle in the back would be kind of scary in sharp turns on pavement.

BOY, have i got some good news for you! for a couple years ive had a clipping out of dirt wheels on my toolbox of a xl650l converted into a street legal trike..this is what it says (while on a trip to PENNSYLVANIA, one of our staffers spotted this custom street legal honda atc. what looks like a 1986 350x is actually a 1993 honda xl650l motorcycle. the owner spent several months building the machine to stay within the local vehicle code laws. he used tecate 250 tripple clamps to widen the xl forks and a custom Bugard swingarm to house an atv swingarm. "everything is by the book" he says "ive been pulled over six times in two different states. for the most part the cops have been cool and think the three-wheeler is pretty neat. its all legal. i have d.o.t. tires, turn signals, speedometer, brake light and a license plate.
ill try to get the pics on here so you can see it. this thing is sweet!

My buddy has had that same article hanging on the wall of his shop for like 8 or 10 years now. I look at it every time I go there.

There are quite a few street legal trikes out there and it is totally do-able. I saw one in person here in Mass. It was a CB750/350X mix, and it was really nicely done.

There was also an XR or an XL, either a 600 or a 650, I can't remember which, up in New Hampshire not long ago. I'm pretty sure Tanks350X here on the boards has pictures of both of those.

my question is, what is a bugard swingarm?? says it houses an atv swingarm. is it the xl front welded to the 350x rear?

i was just reading one of my old 3wheeling mags and they use to sell kits for them to conver then to a trike and back to a bike in a short amount of time, if my memory works right i believe it was the 600. it was a add for them that i seen.

Burgard is a ATV fab shop in Spring Grove area of PA, but I do not think he is doing much with ATVs anymore but I do know HRE ATV could prolly build something. I have been tossing the idea around also, my main concern was the soild rear axle and fenders, since bikes ans cars are supposed to have the fenders covering the tires. We will have to do some more research.

in BC you must have a diff and a street legal frame with maching vin# motor and car tyres you dont even need to get it inspected if you had it licenced before you coverted

My advice would be before getting in to deep go down to were you will want to have it inspected and talk to the mechanic who you will have look over it when its done and ready to street. That way you get a firm grasp on if it is one possible to do and second what you will have to do to make it happen so its legal.
