Hello,
Doing a mini restore on the R. Want to make it look decent and be safe for the summer. Then this winter going to do a full restore.

Started cleaning the bike now. Waiting on the machine shop to give me the jug back..also waiting on parts to come in. I'll update this thread as stuff happens.

Few questions:

What can I use to make all the plastic shine again? Like the airbox for instance.

Can I get new coolant hoses anywhere?

Any tips for cleaning the rads and making them look good again?

Any cleaning/restore tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well she looks great, but keep in mind those OEM Fender's you have on it are Now Discontinued...

IF your going to Ride her, buy Maier Aftermarket fenders.

Those Rear Tires & Front and Discontinued, If your going to ride buy after market.

That's a well taken care of 250R, Not much riding done with her!

It's tuff to ride a low hour bike, Wiseco & Wossner make top notch pistons.

Yeah I bought it last summer from the original owner. He was very sad to see it go. But he never rode it, as you might can tell :D

This winter I plan on getting a new set of plastics all the way around. New tank too. For now Ill just do a new top end, chain, sprockets, exhaust, redid forks, new cables, change all fluids and a good cleaning. Anything else yall suggest for a min-restore?
I plan on doing all the bearings this winter fyi.

Thanks!

Im working on the thumb throttle. I got it all cleaned up, i want to sand it and paint it. But there is residue from the wd40 on it. What do yall use to clean off oil etc on plastic and metal? I dont want all the dust sticking to it.
What type of grease should i use on the components inside the thumb throttle housing?

thanks!

Well, in the hopes to help someone else with such easy questions...........

For cleaning you can buy really kick ass, plastic safe, solvent from paint stores for about 12/gallon
To make plastic look a little better you can buy vinyl and rubber cleaner/conditioner from napa.
Going to use white lithium grease in the throttle housing.

That front tire has a lot of tread. Buy a cheap tire and put that thing on the shelf!

Very nice clean 86! She is going to look great.

lol thanks whyzee..keeps me motivated! atc007 I put the 85 control there, good eye! The run switch was broken on the OEM one. Didnt look like it had been wrecked, just gave loose in the housing. The tires/rims will be put out to pasture soon!

take some oil proof permatex and dab a little on the master link, it will stop it from ever falling or coming off.

My jug and piston made it back in. Few questions:

1. the new head gasket looks thinner than the old one. Its also all metal and not metal and paper like the older one. Is this ok?

2. Do yall use yamabond or anything with the head gasket?

3. The tab on the head gasket should line up with the tab on cylinder?

Thanks!

The easiest questions never get answered :(

1. Dont know yet, ordered another one from Vesrah that looks more like the one I took off. Hopefully one of them will work.
2. No, unless its been gouged by screwdrivers etc.
3. Yes
