So I've been looking for a 200x for a while, got this 84 for $250. Non running and missing parts (still a decent price here on the east coast).

Anyway, haven't gotten it running yet, but i'm having trouble with this tank. The petcock isn't letting fuel out like it should, but it is leaking. My Problem is that I can't get the petcock off, when I turn the bolt on it everything turns (where it is attached to the tank), I don't really want to mess the tank up by being forceful, so and ideas on how to get it off? Not sure who the manufacturer of it is.

Well, it's a runner! ...but it's also a smoker. Anyone have any clue about the tank?

The tank was made by IMS and it is there short track tank.

Cool to know, any idea how I can get that petcock off without screwing up the tank? I guess I could grab the threads with some pliers, but I don't want to mess the threads up either.

Wrap the threads with some type of tape and hold it with pliers and wrench it off . IMS tanks are famous for this issue . If you breaks it or screw it up LMK I think I have one on a spare junk tank . Also replace the seals while you have it apart .

Wow didn't even think about the tape thing. I'm just being super cautious. In the past when i've tired to fix something myself, I ended up making it worse. Projects like getting this X back into shape would have me running scared! I'm determined to get this one complete though, I'm even going to tackle a top end rebuild( a scary concept for me!) It's a very good thing i actually have a manual now. :D

Another question, will the stock shrouds fit this tank?

Well got the petcock off and cleaned, threw the tank and seat back on and took a short ride around the yard. Even with all of the smoke (seriously, tons!) it has a lot of pep and power, it even idles like a champ. Happy to report the clutch seems strong and it went through the gears smoothly. Once my airbox gets here I can fix the brakes and give it a proper ride.

I have the same tank on a 200x I got last weekend. You say it's all turning, are you talking about the nipple and petcock? I just went and took mine off to see how it worked. I had to hold the petcock and loosen the nut. The nut will turn free of the valve itself. I hope this helps. Where in NC are you? I'm just across the state line in TN, just about an hour outside of Asheville.

Instead of the nut on the petcock turning, the stem that went into the tank was turning, I followed shortline's tip and just taped it, grabbed it with some pliers, and wrenched it loose. I'm about an hour on the other side of Asheville, just above the SC line, so about 2 hrs from you.

That looks like a great deal for $250 - good seat, good plastics, good tank, good tires - you're ahead of the game with that deal.

How close are you to Browns Mountain? I go riding there sometimes ( not trikes but bikes ) and to the Steel Creek GNCC every few years.

I'm a little over an hour from there. I've been to it once, it was pretty fun. I plan on taking my XT350 up that way soon to do some dual sport riding.

i usually just use a rag on the threads with vise grips usually keeps the threads pretty good

If it runs and idles real nice, I wonder if the smoke problem could be a 2$ valve
stem seal.

Not even sure if that has one (or both) but I had a 90 or 110
that ran great but smoked until I changed the exhaust valve seal.

I've also seen gas shut off valves leak fuel into the crankcase oil and
dilute the oil so it burns it too.

Kinda funny checking the oil and it's Higher than last time.

Some of the valves on mine ...off isn't necessarily off.

Hope it's a silly simple fix.

Got my airbox in the mail yesterday (thanks shortline!). Got it on and everything put back together, changed the oil, and went for a ride! Surprisingly this thing runs like a dream, idles great and starts first kick! When I first started it was smoking badly like the first day I got it running, but after around 30 mins, the smoke had disappeared:wondering Let it rest for about an hour, came back, started 1 kick still no smoke. Now I need to start gathering parts, I'll probably freshen up the top end in it anyway. All I know is i'm in love, I forgot how fun these little wheelers were, you should've seen the smile on my face after riding

Well here it is now, got the top end rebuilt, and just got it back together this morning. Gotta work on getting it broke in and order a few jets. Still have shrouds and fork guards on their way. Just a few more things I need to do: get mounts made for rear skid plate, new exhaust(probably DG), 400ex hubs and 20in tires, gold rim for the front.

Another question for you guys, I went up to .025 on my bore, what jets should I order to get me started? I would guess order a couple of different sizes richer, but how many # wise, just looking for input form some of you more experienced guys.

shortline10
05-06-2011, 11:05 PM
.25 isnt going to make a difference on jetting . Do a plug chop to see were your at now . Now if you installed a performance cam and ehaust I would say go up to a 114 main jet .

chrisand4
05-06-2011, 11:26 PM
Alright, thanks for the info, I'll probably do some performance mods later on, for now I'm leaving it stock though. I'll do a few plug chops soon just to make sure everything is ok.

chrisand4
05-07-2011, 12:22 PM
So it idles great, and runs awesome to just over 1/3 throttle, plug chop confirms I need to richen it up, probably only a little. I'm going to order a 110 and 112 main and try them. My jet is a 108, but I've found places that say stock 200x is a 110? Anyway, I'm very please with this trike, and I'm proud that I was actually able to do a top end rebuilt, which is a big deal for me!! Manual=necessity.

chrisand4
05-07-2011, 12:27 PM
I think I just figured it out, was 110 was the stock size for 86-87 X's ?

chrisand4
05-08-2011, 09:53 PM
So I just noticed today, my head pipe doesn't have a place to mount a heat shield...and it's bigger than stock. I also think that my mufflers been gutted...looks like I may need to buy a stock exhaust system now.

Well the pic in my sig is the finished product, got her running like a champ now. I'm very happy with it. I may get some 20ich rzr's for the rear and new hubs, but other than that I think it's perfect.
