answers from a PA 3 wheeler guy:
1) - yes and yes. Your local ATV shop should be able to hook you up with registration for roughly $40 - then $20 every 2 years there after. The only snag is the machine has to have never been registered by a previous owner - if it was you have to track them down, get the title (or old reg paperwork) and have them sign off - almost impossible in some cases.
Your insurance company (auto) will most likely be able to offer you insurance - if not - I know progressive will insure you for roughly $120 per year. However - do not put full coverage on it. this is because of the replacement value of 3 wheelers if it gets stolen , damaged , what not. Last I checked - replacement value of 1986 ATC250R in good condition was roughly $400. the prices go down from there - some smaller models like 110s and 90s are far worse - like 490 replacement value.

2) - Not sure about southern PA - but go to http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/index.aspx for PA State legal riding areas

Good luck!

X2^
I just registered my 350x last fall. I needed a copy of the bill of sale(with contact info for the previous owner), a rubbing if the VIN, a check for the taxes owed from buying it( and of course reg. fees), and insurance. I have State Farm and it's costing me roughly $24 a YEAR for liability. Total cost for me was like $84 or so. Also, there are quite a few members here from your area, I'm sure someone will chime in on a riding spot.

Thanks for the replies!!:) Love this site/forum! :Bounce I'm new to 3 wheels and had/have lots of questions and every time I've posted, one or more replies are posted! I've only rode mine around the yard a few times(with a Yamaha mx80 fuel tank & no fenders) and I'm hooked. Can't wait to get this thing done! Thanks again!

All the new rules now in PA....well not so new. I remember when an Ohio reg was good in PA, and Michigan and vise versa. Insurance was never an issue and I blame the Utlity/SportQuad guys for this one. The yourfault accident and the high prices of the machines stolen or headon make for interesting court cases. I haven't been to PA in two years do to the cost of a weekend trip just in regerstration and insurance coverage....sure it lasts for sometime but for me it was a once a year trip 2hrs load and go anyway. It's unfortunate I liked RockeyGap, and the PA trail system. It's a good thing but has become a way of taxation and job creation which has it's expenses. I think the issues with maintance only suggest to me that more trails need to be opened. The trails become beat down...which indicates high use. Well to me, knowing PA has not expanded places like Rockey Gap or Marienville, make me shy away from wanting to go through the hastle of the coverage/tag effort. So if the State complains of a decline in tags sold out of state, I might suggest opening up a few hundered more miles of existing snowmobile trails.
Heck, Ohio isn't much better, but rummor has it Wellsville's open for one more summer:Bounce

I just did this about 2 weeks ago with my X and I live right outside Philly.
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE.
Call this number- 1 866 545-2476 to find out if your trike was previously stolen or registered. Do NOT tell them you own it or have it in your possession, just say you were interested in buying a trike you saw online and the owner e-mailed you the VIN and you wanted to make sure it was good. If they say it is good proceed, if not you gotta either find frame with a clear VIN to swap to or something.
After that I needed a scratch of the vin, if you can't get a good one snap a pic with your phone too for reference for them, and then a bill of sale from the P.O. I didn't need contact info because of the tag place I went to but can't hurt to have (or make up). Then just take the info, tell them you want it registered, and it's quick and easy.
As for insurance, Progressive will do it, State farm will, I know that Allstate won't, and they told me that Hagerty would but they dont either. I used progressive, it's like 70 bucks a year.

Most of the above information is thanks to a member by the name of fugget1 aka Chas. He really helped me out when I was getting my stuff done so I figured I'd pass it along.

P.S- Generally smaller tag places that have a crappy outside appearance are easier to get this stuff done at.

Its pretty easy like the others said. As long as it has a clean vin your good to go.

Thanks sonic that helps greatly knowing what i'll need before I go. SOOOO:wondering where is the vin normally stamped on a 86' 250es? I know the sticker is on the steering head but half of that is gone.
