well you wouldnt want that to be happening, check oil level?> LOL im not a 2 stroker im a 4stroker, apparently all 2 stroke 2fiddies make a ticking noise like a hockey card (canadian way) stuck in the spokes of your bicycle wheel..

Two-strokes are like alien technology to me, but yeah, it sounds like something is wrong in there. I'll be interested to hear what the more experienced guys say.

sound's like a healthy 2-stroke to me

The noise is probably a combination of excessive piston to cylinder clearance, and counter balancer bearing being worn out.Possible clutch basket rattle too.

Mine is about that loud, but I rebuilt the CB, and my top end is about 2 years old. My R engine has always been a noisy one. My quad and her trike are quiet, but they are low hour engines.

My 86 rattles just like that and its gotten louder over last summer. It need a top end for sure its got 140 psi left. It needs clutch work and the motor has never been apart since new. I put on atleast 1000 miles on it since I got it last April.

alright, 1 last question,i went riding for several hours the other day and when i shut off my atc to take a break a weird white smoke was coming out of my exhaust.....could it be the packing or oil that built up in the expansion chamber or silencer?

I'm sorta like you, I notice any and every little sound. And as the motor is breaking in, be it new reeds, top end, clutch, the sounds do change slightly as things break in (wear). I noticed on Billy's latest video he was leaning forward on a hill climb and his R sounded similar to yours. I have an 85' Tecate, the tick isn't as loud at idle, but sounds similar (the front part of motor) as yours at some RPM's. Mosh hit on it too an knows his stuff as well as fabiodriven. I was just sayin' my sounds similar also.

yea i pay attention to every noise ahaha im a little paranoid ive owned several 2 strokes and ive had bad luck with every one so im trying to make this motor last cause i plan on keeping my R till i cant ride anymore and then some

Without standing next to your engine it is hard to tell if it is too loud or not,as the camera really amplifies the ticking sound.
But if you feel better here is a vid of my R engine, you can hear the ticking it has.Been pounding on it hard for 2 years with no issues.

My Tecate makes that noise and most guys who are new to this stuff express concern when they aren't used to it. TecateDan rebuilt his motor from top to bottom, soup to nuts, and his motor made that noise right off the bat. I had to comfort him as well.

new problem just arose!!!!!! damnet! i was riding for a little bit and i came to a complete stop and it didnt catch any gears at all 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th or 6th........i walked it back to my house and let it sit for about 2 hours so i wasnt mad and i had a clear mind,i got on it it fired right up but still wouldnt catch gear at all,i put it in first clutch completely let out then it would catch after giving it gas then the higher the rpm it ouldnt catch at all....could it be the clutch or would it b the gears?

Are you able to shift through all the gears if you rock it back and forth with the motor off? It sounds like it could be the clutch. When mine went out it was working fine then over about 25 minutes, it was slipping so bad I couldn't move. I really had to wind it up to get a crawl going.

As for your ticking, mine does that too. If I pull in the clutch it seems to go away.

yea i can go through all of the gears when its off if i rock it back and forth....

sorry havent been able to get on for a while because i only have an ipod........i finally got ahold of a computer hahaha so about my clutch.....would i have to just replace the steel plates and friction plates or what? i have it all taken apart right now and dont want to buy a clutch rebuild kit unless i know exactly what i have to replace....just springs friction plates and metal plates correct? someone please reply soon because i dont want it taken apart just sitting in my garage

Check the basket for groves. I had a KX250 (I bought not running) that was worn so bad that the plates would slide back in place.

Call me paranoid but the last time I had my clutch apart I replaced the bolts that hold the pressure plate and springs on. I'd rather spend a couple bucks on new bolts than try to extract a broken one from the inner basket...

sounds like your on the right track with friction plates, the metal plates and springs though.

my bolts look like theyve never been touched.......im pretty sure this is the first time the crank case has been opened.....only 2 previous owners and only have had the head replaced and im pretty sure only 1 top end rebuild before i owned it....the last owner only rode it about twice a year in the desert soim pretty sure its the stock clutch im replacing......im gonna go with the stock bolts unless i get the heavy duty clutch kit

I don't have any experience with Tusk stuff but from a quick research it sounds pretty solid and that's a really good price too.
