View Full Version : Project "Bandito" 90/110

I picked up a Bandito frame this past winter. I've spent way too much time looking for a donor 90 for this project so I guess I'll be using a 110 instead. A good friend told me about one that he ran across. I have to go pick it up this weekend. I finally found a nice 1st generation atc90 tank. Those things are hard to find in good shape. I also found some 78atc 90 rear fenders and seat. The fenders are a little rough but nothing I can't handle. The seat doesn't look too bad for now. I'm not sure what direction I'll go with the engine yet though. :wondering The 110 is supposed to run well so I may just clean the engine up from it and run it "as is" for now. I decided to just get it together for now so I can ride it this summer. I want to keep it as old school as I can but I don't want to get so deep into it that I'm afraid to take it out and play on it. :naughty: Any input from you atc 90/110 guys is very welcome!
I have a few pictures of what I have so far. More to come. Many more.

This is the donor I picked up. I can't use the rear axle / brake assembly. Wrong year.

Heck, I have a couple of 90 motors I'm not using... I also have a set of US 90 fenders that could be usable... sounds like a cool project

Maybe you should call it "Bandaddio"?

I keep finding donors but they aren't the right year. The 110 I found as a donor is a running bike but I can't use some of the parts from it for this project. I'm still looking for a donor that would be a better candidate. However I may end up just buying a complete rear axle assembly and using the engine forks and controls from this donor. My rear fenders and seat still haven't come yet. I did get a steel front fender today. More pictures to come.

I couldn't either. For $73 shipped I couldn't turn it down. Fenders are cracked in the back but every other set I saw was about the same. I jumped on these. :Bounce Buy it now!!
I couldn't believe how nice the tank was either. I have a PCCC frontend on the way for it. My goal is to have it together for Trikefest! So far things are moving along pretty well.

I do like that tank. On my PCCC front end, I actually had to have the underside of the top triple machined to give me enough room to fit on my suspension 110 frame. Beware that you might have to do this as well. There just wasn't enough room to fit the thin washer and the top cap on, and this was after I ground off some on the serrated nut that holds the bottom triple tree on as well. Plenty of room now.

Thanks for the tip Veal. I plan on using a PCCC front end on a Nicholson frame. I just had to weld the steering stop holes that were stripped out. While I got it in the mill putting new holes in it I will take some off the boss!

I'm thinking about modifying the fenders I have , since they are already broken, to look more like these low profile fenders. I have a lot of experience with fiberglass so I see it as a real possibility. By the way I had to steal this pic to post it here. Sorry Robin and Saul.

Also Daddio, if you are going "old skool", then you need to fashion yourself an aluminum plate that fits into the indented rear area of those rear fenders. It is to help keep the rear fenders from flexing so much and cracking and also to help reinforce the rear fenders from rocks and all. The aluminum generally went on the outside of the rear fenders. Some people painted their aluminum with different designs and names and such.

I did a little archaeological work on the rear fenders today at work. I also fixed the cracks and reinforced the rear area that seems to be a weak point. I also noticed that there was very little fiberglass in the fenders. It almost looks like they mixed in fine fiberglass into the gelcoat and either sprayed it in the mold or injected it into it. Here are a few more pics. I have some video of the actual repairs that I did.

Next question.
Should I keep these in stock form or make them Low profile like the ones in the pic of Robin Davis's old racer?

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/lrdunlap/mad70s017.jpg

I removed a pile of stickers off of this one and got to the bottom. Check it out.

I have a question for the atc 90 gurus. If you look at the pictures I took of the offroad sticker I removed, under that sticker was part of another sticker. It appears that someone cut around the offroad sticker and removed the rest of that sticker so they could change color. It was repainted a navy blue color over the red and before the black. The Oneal sticker was put on after it was painted black.
My question is; did Honda put a sticker like this on the early atc's or was this an early aftermarket fender? If it is aftermarket, who would have made it. You can see that the original date on the offroad sticker is June 74, so they are at least that old.

Go to my pic's first page fifth row third one over. BAMB. 1/2 your question is answered. Ok i read along with your project. Very nice so far. I threw a red flag right away with that sticker being a 1974. The plastic it is on is later 70's. That sticker on there is so weard. I knew right away that something didnt smell right. How a sticker from 1974 got on a late model fender is beyond me. I have 27 atc, us90's and have ripped down over 100 of them in the past years. I have some of my collection posted and most not. Picks of donor bikes and ones ive stripped down this year. Nothing ever surprises me with the 3 wheelers any more. Thats a one year only rear decal. WEARD!

Which year had that decal? I got it from generation cycle and they said it came from a 78 atc90. I could see from the pictures that it was a fiberglass fender. exactly what I wanted. best part beside the price was the seat. Perfect foam and nice pliable cover. I looked at rear fenders for several months before I settled on this set. I spent a few hours this week at work fixing the cracks and re-enforcing the rear section that seemed to always have cracks in them. I have some pics and video of the process.
Thanks for the info.please let me know what year they are supposed to be. Really curious.

I just checked your pics and found the one that you mentioned. It is the one. No doubt about it. Could it be that they issued the 74 stickers when you got the first one and just replaced the part of the sticker with the year on it each year as needed instead of making completely new stickers every year? I kept the year stickers that I peeled off the main sticker before I started removing the big sticker. I was just curious about it. I enjoy doing detective work on old stuff as I work on it.

The bike in the pic was a 1978. I bought it from the original owners kid. I have never seen another one and i own 4 other 1978, 4 1977, 1 1976, and 2 1979 atc 90's the rest are early us90 atc's in my collection of toys. (or 1979 1980 110's) I do not own a 1975 any more i sold it. None of the rear stickers are like that one you have. Only the 1978 in the pick of the one i parted out. I too fixed that fender and sold it. Like i said i have never found another one like it. This is why i wrote on this message. If you find out please drop me a message and fill me in. Its like a disco look when you really look at it. i only can come up with that it was a late 1978 into 1979 atc 90 fender. This is when Honda changed to a 110. I might of been the last sticker before the switch. Just my guess. I have owned many and looked at hundreds and hundreds over the years never another one till yours.

That is interesting. I thought it may have been an aftermarket fender. All of the ones I've seen have a black sticker with a white outline. It is rather strange. I have been going through some old magazine adds but they are all in black and white and poor quality pictures at that. Thanks for the info. I'm not done searching yet.

My first 3 wheeler (eva) I got last summer from original owner is a 78 with that same disco sticker. It cant have more than 10 hrs on it, but it has the cracks too. I will take a picture Monday. The guy also sold me his 83 atc70, it has the factory wiring harness for lights, I guess that was a 83' only option I heard. I was going to scarf patch it from the under side, and glass in a fibreglass dowl. I saw the alum plate mod, might have to try that also, the material is kinda like a cross between fibreglass and plastic, I think is just small fibre, fiberglass??

This is the fenders as I purchased them. You can see the large crack on the left side. There were many other small ones on the fender that were repaired but I'm focusing on the larger ones.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/lrdunlap/mad70s016.jpg

This is the large piece of steel that had been bolted to the underside of the fender to keep it from breaking by the previous owner.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e183/lrdunlap/100_0388.jpg

This is a picture of it stripped of paint except the very back where I wanted to do a little research before I stripped it. I used a dual action air sander to remove the paint.

Ok! Here is the video part of the fiberglass repairs I made on the fender. I've been in the autobody repair business for 36 years and have fixed all types of fiberglass parts from boats to semi front ends and everything in between. I use this method and have never had any problems with failure after repairs. Just giving you guys a little background on me. I currently work for a Honda dealership.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64j80WLhlg0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH6XbUPpT2s

I use plenty of fiberglass resin when I do my repairs. DON'T SKIMP. I actually dip the fiberglass matte into the cup of resin and press it firmly in place with my hands to make sure there are no air bubbles in or under the matte. I wear two pairs of gloves on each hand, just in case! Also closely follow mixing instructions for the product you are using.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI8mods6Hs4

As you can see the outside of the fender is still in pretty good shape. I do the reinforcement on the backside for this reason. It makes the finishing of the outside much easier this way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2gyq2aGmKY

This is how I finish the outside. The filler I use on the outside is as strong or stronger than the material the fender is made of. The matte and resin is much stronger than the material the fender is made of.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce32zJEwbEk

This is the product that I prefer to use on my repairs. There are many others out and I've tried most of them but this is my favorite.

I found some paint that was a very close match to the tank I'm using. I'm not going to paint the tank. The original paint is too nice to mess with.

I have an almost fool proof way to remove broken studs without drilling or tapping and this eliminates the possibility of breaking off drill bits, easyouts and taps in the holes. I've even used this process to remove broken drill bits, easyouts and taps that have been broken off trying repair broken studs and bolts.
I use a mig welder to build up enough material so that I can get a good bite on it with a Good pair of vice-grips. As soon as I get it built up I put the vice-grips on it and start turning them back and forth. You sometimes have to start in very small l increments until the bolt or whatever starts to move more freely. I've had the weld break off many times until I finally got it moving. Over the years I have a success rate of over 99%. The heat from the weld loosens up the bolt, stud or whatever enough to get it out. I've even removed taps, etc. that were broken off below the surface.

Here are a few more items I have for this project. I need to sand blast the headlight housing. I may or may not use the carb . It was part of the deal with the PCCC front end. I also got an NOS vented front fender with the deal. I'm going to use the steel fender on this one though.
I also got the engine running from the donor 110 today. It sounds pretty good. I will probably leave it pretty much stock this year. I need to get it out and ride it a little before I tear it down. Hopefully next weekend I can get that done. I'm starting to run out of time if it's going to be done for TF.

What do they measure in diameter? YZ80 and CR80 forks were commonly used but you can count on about anything that worked at the time. Best to just pull the seals and measure them. Or they might have sizes on them that are readable.

Thanks for that info on the forks. I noticed that the forks have caps on top. no way to pressurize them. I doubt that I'll really need it but is there any caps that will fit that can be adjusted via adding a little pressure?
As far as the carb goes, I'm undecided at this point. The only thing I saw that looked different was the chrome cap. It looks like an old 2stroke carb to me. I have an intake for it and a few other carbs that we use on the 70s that we flat track. They are all tricked out. One of the guys that has a track on his property used to own a motorcycle, atv shop back in the day. He's built many a stroker in his day. He still has a small machine shop at his house. I'm going to let him work a little magic on my engine this winter. Until then I think I'll stay stockish with the engine. I may run a bigger intake and carb with a pod filter and a pipe but that's about it. I just want to ride it this summer!!

I found an old Kerker exhaust that I'm going to use on this project. The headpipe is in rough shape but I know a guy at a muffler shop around here that can bend me a new one if he has the old one as a pattern. The muffler seems to be in pretty good shape for the age. Now all I need is some wheels and tires.
I also got the 84 110 running and rode it a little. I'm going to get the carb off and clean it and then take it out again and see if it's worthy of putting on this project for the summer. I had to keep the choke on part way for it too run. I also noticed that occasionally it would go from neutral to 2nd and I would have to shift it down into 1st. It could be because it was idling a little high from time to time. I think the throttle cable is junk and sometimes it would hang up. I have a good one I'll put on when I'm cleaning the carb and see if it shifts up into 1st ok then.

Your tranny problem is prob a broken shift drum stopper . Easy to replace .

Nice job on your custom 90.
I got a question. Maybe a dumb one. But I picked up a 1976 ATC90 missing most of the engine and wiring. I bought it for the parts to put on my 79 ATC110. Tires,Tank and some other parts. I have a descent ATC90 rear fiberglass fender that came with it. I,m thinking of using it on a newer ATC110 1985 frame to make it look like a old ATC90. It was missing the seat and cushion. Do the ATC90's have a seat pan like the ATC110 do.

I'm slowly picking up the parts I need for this build. The second 110 I picked up for parts didn't have a brake drum so I asked my son if he had an extra brake rotor and hub for a 2nd gen 250r so I could check to see if it would fit on the 110 axle. It did! So I started looking for a mechanical type brake caliper that I could use with it. I found one! It has provisions for a cable and the foot brake. It's on the way with the 3 bolt front hub. I also picked up two more wheels for it.
I also got some more seat time on the 84 110 that will donate the engine for the time being. I got the carb dialed in a little better and think the transmission is actually ok. The more I rode it the better it got. Looks like I may make TF11 with it after all. :w00t: It won't be the finished product but I'll get to work out the bugs this way. :beer

Sorry that I just let this thread drop off like I did. I moved shortly after my last post on it. My girlfriend at the time started having some serious health issues. Then in 2012 she suffered a fatal heart attack. After that I considered selling all of my trikes. I'm really glad now that I didn't!!! Since then I became reaquainted with a girl that lived across the street from me when I was pretty young. We hadn't seen each other in over 40 years. We got married four months ago on July 4th. Things are lookin up!
I ended up using the beater 110 as a beater. After a good tune up and a few oil changes, it runs like a top. It's been to TF twice. 13 & 14. I picked up a good donor 90 at TF11:wondering but ended up fixing it up instead. I used the rear fenders that I fixed up on this thread on it, along with the seat. It went to Tf 13 & 14 also. I picked up a 1974 atc 70 frame and rear axle assembly at FT13 and restored it in time for TF14. So  I guess you could say that, life happened, and I have been very busy. :D
And now I'm sure you are wondering :wondering about the Bandito. I still have it and I keep picking up tidbits for it when I can. You will see lots of progress on this starting fairly soon. I have found quite a few vintage goodies for it. I plan on getting a set of the low profile rear fenders for it. About a year ago I got a stroker crank and big bore set up for it. I also plan on keeping it rigid instead of semi suspended. I think at this point my goal is to have it done in time for TF15. We'll see how I do. Keep you posted!!!

A few pics of the ones I've done since I last posted on this thread. These three pics were taken at TF14 and that's my wife in the picture with the beater 110.

Yes, Sir, we did. We worked for two weeks after TF then got married and went to Wyoming for our Honeymoon. This was a very busy summer for me. I'll see if I can get some pictures up this weekend of some of the goodies that I'll be using for this project.

Here are a few of the parts that I will be using for this project. The H&S is a 58mm stroker. I have a 59.5 Bapp also but it needs to be rebuilt so it will be saved for another project. I'm going to get a Web cam for it and I'll be deleting the sub tranny and installing a manual clutch. I have 3 pipes to choose from. I'm not sure which one I'll use yet.

Well I'm still collecting STUFF for this build. I think I have everything nailed down as far as parts to be used. I'm wondering if any of you guys have a real good picture of the BAPP colors from their product packaging. I want to do this in period correct paint scheme and I think the BAPP colors and bold stripes would be perfect. I don't have any really good pictures to use to match the paint to. If anyone has a really clear shot of the BAPP product packaging that could post it up here, I would be very grateful. The tank is ready for paint and the rear fenders are in the mail, so it's time for me to get serious about the paint.

Or take an arc welder and weld the welding rod on the bolt and just use a vise grips from there

Thanks a bunch. I've been searching for any and all info and pictures of these colors so I could get the paint for this project. I wasn't sure if that was a odd brown or burgundy that was used. I am a bodyman by trade so getting the paint is no problem. I was just a little unsure of the one color. The rest I was fairly certain about. Now I'll just borrow one of the paint chip books until I find the suitable colors.
I also want to say that I'm not trying to copy the one you're building. I had been looking at different custom paint jobs from the late 70's through early 80's for this. I found some of the best stuff on the custom vans of that era but I kept thinking about the picture of all of the Team Bapp bikes lined up. I first saw that on a thread here from 2010 I think. I know from experience that solid colors are the easiest to touch up or repair small areas. And also knowing this will be ridden, it's likely to get a chip or two. The BAPP machines had the bold stripes and they were all solid colors, so it didn't take long to decide on that particular color scheme. Besides, BAPP was a major player in the beginning of the atc racing scene.
I'm sure your's will have a lot more BAPP stuff on it than mine. By the way, I'm going with chrome forks not suspended. I'm going for the flat track look. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Like you said, it's been a little too cold in the garage to work on projects. I would spend more time trying to keep it warm than I would, working.

From day one..... A few days after the first 3Wheeling magazine came out, I always thought the BAPP bikes were cool. :)
Here is a pic of me and my brother from sometime in 1980. I painted the tank and fenders in my room with a rattle can. LOL What were my parents thinking....
Ever since I have got back into 3 Wheelers my goal has been to recreate one of the BAPP bikes.

Cool! I brought the Sikkens solid color chip book home from work. There are over a hundred pages with 48 chips per page. The orange, red and yellow, I'm pretty happy with but the purple is no where near what I thought it should look like. The one pic with the flash washed out the yellow but it looked good in sunlight, so we'll see.

Don't shoot me for the rattle cans... lol. Just using them for the color match. I will have paint mixed to spray.

The pic's do not give a good representation of the color. You have to see them in person to get the real effect.

This is the color I am using for the Base Yellow.

Cool stuff! The tire, wheel I was thinking of using won't be as wide as that and it's just a regular knobby. The tread pattern on that tire looks like the tread pattern on the rears that I'm using. I have the fenders and the rear tires mocked up now to see if I have the clearance to run the rears I have for it. Looks good. I'm gonna mount them on my wheels today. Also I think I found a solution for my paint dilemma. I'll find out in a few days.
