Hey guys. I'm working on my long-term '86 200s and was wondering if there were any aftermarket parts that would help me. I have a XR200R parts bike and I've robbed the carb and cam. I would like to do the build on the cheap.
Any ideas? I'm up for home-fried stuff too, not just off-the-shelf.
Anything at all is appreciated. :wondering

I'm pretty sure a 200x piston has a flat top and will bring you up to 9xx:1(i know it works for the other atc200(s), that should give you some good performance. just make sure your pull cord is in good shape and you are gonna need to run premium(and you may need a performance exhaust)

open up the intake and exhaust ports some, clean up the casting and polish the exhaust. Leave the intake rough.

use the complete top end from your xr200 parts bike, including cylinder and piston.

I have a 84 200s and it is wicked fast. Way to fast for a hardtail. It has a 40 over piston, new honda line head, all redone bottom end but stock, and a cobra exhaust. The carb is also rejetted but stock and an aftermarket aircleaner.
if the top end is good off the xr use the whole works, carb also. You will need an aftermarket exhaust, the cobras are kinda loud but they are new and under $140 for the whole pipe. depending on what you plan on doing with it you can also play around with gearing. 1-2 teeth on the front make a huge differance and can bedone for under $20.

+1 with pipeline triker, stock gearing is 11-43 i believe, 1-2 tooth difference on the front would make a big difference on top speed but you will loose bottom end power.
my idea for mine is to run 12-38 on the next sproket+chain change, we'll see how that goes :bounce

if you you use a crf 230 head gasket there a little thinner and it will raise the compression by by .5 so it will make you 8.5 to 1 instead of 8 to 1

remember this thing has to be started with a rope. It will get crazy hard to pull over with a stock XR top end. let alone any other mods for more comp. no matter what I think you are going to what to get real familiar with rebuilding rewinds.

Thanks fellas. I will definitely look into this stuff. I was also thinking about hollowing out the muffler but leaving the can for a different sound. Would that hurt the torque and back pressure, etc.?

You will need to spend some money on a pipe. The stock head pipe is going to be way to small.

What's your recommendation? I've got the resources to fab one, just wondering what size pipe/muffler.

open up the intake and exhaust ports some, clean up the casting and polish the exhaust. Leave the intake rough.
do not do this. you do not have tha actual flow numbers and doing so can actually cause it to perform worse than the stock untouched head. I recommend only port matching the ends no more than 1" into the ports at most (intake side only really)
you can install a 200x piston that brings you up to 9:5:1. The 200x is the same as the 85 and eariler 200x top end except it has a decompression lever.
you can use the piston out of a 82-85 200x (wiseco makes a 10.25:1 piston that is really a great upgrade. you can then use a XR200 cam for a slight better camming or get a web stage1 cam for better performance.
it really comes down to how much you wanna spend will determien how much performance you will gain.

I got a 200x piston in mine and I don't think its hard to start at all. your stator should be good enough that all you do is; pop decomp for a nice pull, then pull it around till the comp stroke(you will here and feel when its there) then just pull(not fast, just steady) alot of people go ape trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro on the pull cord and think there bike is hard to start, but you really dont have to pull fast, if your on the comp stroke and you pull it past tdc at ANY speed it will start if running right.

+1 my 200s is so easy to pull over (new top end gasket set), i never have to use the dcompression button and im still running the original rope. always starts on 1/4 of a pull !!!
