Hey, I saw this trike on craigslist and had a few questions for the experts out there. I have never owned a trike, and the one time I rode one I flipped it. Is this a common problem? This one has HUGE rear and front tires. It's for my son, and I want it to be safe. Just for street use. Can they be registered in the state of NY also? It's $500, so what do you think, is it a good buy? Thanks
Can't figure out the upload process, I'm new here. Heres a link to the ad...

*sigh*
1: Trikes are just as dangerous as anything else, when people get stupid and ride/drive out of their experiance bad things happen.
2: Trikes require more "body language" to ride, rather than just sit and go, this makes the ride more immersive, but requires more practice to master.
3: Those are regular tire sizes for three wheelers
4: Streets aren't the best enviroment for three wheels, when on asphalt it makes it harder to turn
5: Last I remember they cannot be NY registered
6: At $500 thats an awesome deal if it's not been spray bombed
7: By the sound of it I don't think you need to have a trike for you and your son, UNLESS you teach him careful riding, and the proper technique.
8: Since you posted a link I'd bet a member here might snatch it out from under you.
Remember, trikes don't flip by themselves. And ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET, and NEVER ride out of your level.

Thanks, it seemed like a good deal, but maybe for my son i'll stick with a quad, they are probably a little safer since he is very inexperienced.

I got my nephews riding trikes at 8 years old.. but i don't teach them how to get out of first gear, HELMETS are a must for them. I let them ride our yt125, bone stock and slow enough for them. I've taken them on rides since they wear 5 or so (2nd gear tops). I do advocate safety to anyone more than anything.
That YTM200 might be a little much for a beginner. If he revs the engine and shifts without holding the break.. can be an instant flip. The YT and YTM wheelie easier than the Kawasakis and Hondas. They are very very fun, but everything Chazz said is very true.
We don't know the age of your son, that is 1 of the issues im seeing here. The 125 is big for an 8 year old, a tri-zinger would be better. An ATC 90/110 is usually a good starting place when it comes to beginners. Not enough power to get you in trouble(with common sense) and not slow enough to be boring... sorta

For on mostly street get him a good dirt bike/enduro. I love my trikes but they don't feel near as good on pavement as a dirt bike. From the sounds of it if you flipped a trike the one and only time you rode one, body english won't be something you can really teach your son. A dirt bike would be a good place to start, but who knows, maybe he's got mad skills just hiding. Could go look at the trike and let him take it for a ride. Looks like a real good buy. And they are a lot lighter than quads. Only you and him can decide if its right for him. But it looks like a great trike.
