83, 84, 85 will bolt right in. The 86 is totally different. You can also you a 185S or 200S engine.

i was hoping the '86 would work because i hear it's a better engine and it has a 6th gear, and theres one on ebay for 400

You would have to do a lot of fab work to get an 86 engine to fit in. I wanted to do the same a while back, but quickly found that you simply can't just bolt and go.

i am about to sell my recently built 200x 84 engine. wiseco 12:1 pisotn and web stage1 cam. really nice setup with 30mm carb. if intersted, let me know as I am thinking of putting a different motor in the 200x. ;)
it's a very stout motor! runs very string too! would take $400 for it as it's had the top end redone and ginished breaking in and ridden about 5 hours total.

Yep, XR 200 is a bolt and go. I sold a stroked one to a member on here, said it blows his stock 200x engine away. The only issue is that it's reverse kick, rather than forward. Would work well on a dune bike with cut down fenders, not so much on OEM fenders.

^You just asked about an 86' motor for $400 on e-bay as an option. oscarmayer has a built one for $400. Don't think you realize that the parts to build one will run more than that, that's a heck of a deal. You'd better look for a 185/200 to suit your budget.

I second what Hang said, Oscarmayer has offered a heck of a deal on that motor. It's worth not eating out one night for that price.

I'm SOOOO tempted to say your mother, but I'm too nice.
My point still stands though. It's easily worth an extra $50.

Great call virus, commend you partner. Good to see someone taking advise. You'll have one hot x now. When we built out 1st x a year or so ago, a used 1st generation X motor in o.k. condition was going for $500-$600 (they were basically running junk), with only 1,300 parts listed on e-bay, so I just went out and bought running whole bikes for a couple of hundred dollars and then switched one of our X's to a auto-x with a 200 and 185 ATC motor. Now there are 3,756 parts, so a motor in reality should only go for a couple of hundred. I have bought two running 200x's for $250 a piece and one for around $300(?). So a rebuilt motor with the parts oscarmayer (and skilled labor to boot) mentioned is awesome. Waiting for the x motor in son's to go out, and hope to find a steal like that too.

ok me PMed me, I gotta find out about shipping to him. But IU know that it typically costs about $50 $60 to ship an engine like this with insurance. I'll insure it for $800 why? because to get another one, redo it the way I did would cost nearly $800 w/ the shipping. (new timing chain, new gasket set, new oil seals, new cam, new piston, new valves, new springs, new tons of crap in the top end area. so you should be good for a while.
Give me about 3-4 days to build a crate so I can get it weighed. I'm going to build a small wooden frame out of 2x4 screwed together so I can ensure this thing does not take any pounding, then wrap it in cardboard to fool the postal so it's cheaper. ;)
Sorry, but I'm very picky about my motors when I ship something because I do not want any reason for it to get damaged.
I'll keep ya posted.
