Hi I got an 1985 250R and I am looking at getting some easy modifications to do for a little bit more power. I am thinking K & N air filter, FMF fatty exhaust, and new reeds. Anyone think of anymore little upgrades I can do without totally ripping into the engine? I will also probably replace the chain and sprockets so I won't lose any power there.

Also, with doing these modifications would I have to change my settings on my carb? What is also the best spark plug to run? Thanks!

I wouldn't go with fmf it's a waste I would just save up and buy the esr pipe, night and day difference of power, then a 86 carb or 38 PWK reeds and air filter

My 87 trx250 has a UNI filter, Paul Turner pipe, fatboy 2 silencer, V force 3 reeds and a Mikuni 38mm flat slide carb. I'm running 13/38 sprockets and she goes pretty good. I'm looking at taking the next step with engine mods/porting now. With the mods you're thinking about, you will definitely have to rejet.

I don't think its a waste if comparing it to a stock pipe. My '86 with a FMF pipe and 39pwk ran its butt off. They can also be had for way less money than the ESR. IF money is tight I would recomend the FMF.

Cheap mods, vforce 3 reeds, pipe and k&n filter oh and jetting! Huge difference from stock! I have an fmf pipe and I'm getting an esr pipe I'd pass on the fmf.

Thanks for the advice I wouldn't mind checking out that fmf if your willing to pass that up. I want to check out esr too just to see what pricing I'm looking at. Would getting the '86 carb give me that much mire power? Also what would I jet it too? I'm pretty green when it comes to carbs

A lot of what you want to do for power depends on what you are looking to gain, lower and mid range power or top end power. Paul turner makes a nice hi rev pipe but unless your in the power range of the pipe it's kinda hard to ride. I run an ESR atc 5 pipe and silencer with a pwk 39mm on a 68.5mm cyl and I use this combo for duning, mostly a nice smooth power range, no real hard hit when the pipe kicks in but a nice blend through out the power range. As far as carb size and style, I know guys running 36mm and 38mm carbs on stock cyls and they run great. As for the type of carb the PJ, which comes stock on the 86 will be and improvement over the 85 round slide and a decent over all carb. The PWK "air stiker" is a flat slide carb and has better throttle responce in the midrange as I understand it. The ESR pipe is a very versitile pipe and works good for mid and top end set applications.

Run a new air filter, ditch the stock lid, run a ESR/PT high rev pipe, and some v force 3's and your MINT!

For a carb, look for a 250dirt bike carb. These days, they are all 38-39mm and flat slide and can be had for cheap. Air strykers(and the TM) flow about 30percent more air than the conventional round slide.
Example, 1991 yz250 came with a Keihin PWK38 - flat-slide.

It's usually cheaper than looking for 1 designed for the 250r, just get a dirt bike, rejet - good to go.

1997-99 cr250 carb (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-97-98-99-CR250-CR-250-Carb-Carburetor-Throttle-/230601491061?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b0eb8275)
mikuni TM 38mm (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/trx250r-blaster-banshee-keihin-pwk-mikuni-tm-38mm-carb-/170622392759?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b9e319b7)

I'd honestly go for that 2004 RM250 carb, I'd imagine it has new technology allowing better flow/fuel mixtures. Since the aid of computer design in the last 10 years, 2 strokes started getting extra mean... :)

The 125 bikes use a 34mm carb on average, so don't look for them

In my opinion (for what it's worth)
I bought an PT Hi Rev pipe, any one is better than a stock, even the old DG's
I bought a 38 pwk, but any flat slide or D slide carb is a huge improvement, even the same ID.
Aftermarket reed cages are always good for better flow, but if you can't afford to swing too much just get some new boyesen reeds.
Take the lid off your airbox for more air flow, but if you are going with the K&N air filter make sure you get a pre filter, either K&N brand or outerwears.
Gearing will help with speed, but not more power.

The esr pipe is worth the money but there has been used FMF on ebay pretty cheap under $100.

Take off that airbox lid, jet it up and add a pipe. People seem to like the Paul Turner Hi-Rev pipe. Adding a different carb/intake and reeds compliments the other mods.........

Quick isn't cheap, but not a fortune if you know where to look; Shop around!

I would buy an 86' cr250 base and head gasket(thiner than the atc = more compression), and get the 38mm flat slide, and a good exhaust I like trinity products.

I think I will hold off on the carb for now unless I find a smoking deal. I will start off with the air filters and slowly upgrade as I go probably getting the exhaust system then reeds. I am planning on doing the same to my 200x minus the reeds to see if I can get a little extra jam.

If u want more "jam" ever thought of saving trailprotrailpro money selling the 200x and buying a 350x ? :)

I don't know if I could ever part with the 200x it has always been so good to me. One day though I would like to invest in a nice 350x.
