When i was riding yesterday, my engine started to clunk at a certain RPM. and it starts idling high and at a weird tempo. This has never happened in summer. I know this isnt normal. has this happened to anyone else? does anyone have an answer?

No one has an answer?!?!?

Did you do a compression check, with a gauge?

All R's are noisy but a new "clunk" means something is loose. Crank pin bearing, mains, counterbalancer (or holder/screws) can all make a racket!

The compression would still be fine.

Yank the stator cover and see if the crank has play, esp. when hot. Check the other bearings I mentioned.

If you haven't torn the bottom apart for allot of hours, plan on diving in :D

Yes dirtcrasher, that is true, but it makes more sense to start trouble shooting the easy stuff first before you start taking the engine apart.

Does it clunk in neutral or only in gear? Might be a broken skirt.

it only clunks in gear and at low rpm's. but its never done his in summer and it only starts after about half an hour of riding. compression is good.

and it only clunks when i give it gas at a low rpm

In neutral, no problems there's no load on the engine. In gear.. load and struggling to go until it's off the bottom end.
I'd go as far as looking pulling the reeds out and looking at the piston skirt. Piston with broken skirts can rev high, but the bottom end they cluck and clack and crap.

Drain the oil out, and hope it's not discolored. I'm not sure what all to say on that 1, except maybe the clutches need adjusted or are worn out?
I've got a vid I'll upload to you tube later, blaster broke the piston skirt, maybe it will have a similar sound.

I have a 82 250r that needs carb work for $500 if ya need / want another engine with a trike atached to it....

Are you using the right oil?
And what was the last thing you did mechanically to the bike?

i am using 10w-40 its what the manual says and the last things i did to it were some painting an new filter, rear bearings and a carb rebuild kit

well i found out yesterday that my flywheel is rusty

The fact that you did carb work and now have idling problems, could be related. Doesn't really explain the clanking.

it only iddles high after it starts clanking

Auto_Demon

ive never had idling problems before this clanking happened

Does this happen after it heats up? If so, something could be cracked somewhere and letting in extra air causing the idle to go up, and the fuel mixture to lean out and speed it up. Doesn't sound good. I would just take it apart and start measuring everything. Check the bearings and seals, cylinder walls, etc. Take apart the cylinder off the cases, and check the counter bearing holder too.

But wait, before you do that, take your carb off and check the reeds. You could also take off the exhaust and do an inspection in there. What does your plug look like?

reeds and plug are fine, my exhaust is chalk full of carbon
