I just got my Free 83 big red, got it running. But it seems to pop it back fires. when i let off of it as now and then. and when i shift up. I have cleaned the carb once, I am thinking it could be a dirty carb. But i have also heard it could be the exhaust valve isnt adjusted correctly. I'll be posting some pictures once we get the racks painted and the platics waxed. Not a crack in the plastics.

Does it still have the factory exhaust?
A small exhaust leak is enough to cause backfires.
Improper jetting can also be a culprit.
I have never heard that a mis-adjusted exhaust valve can cause backfires, but it does seem somewhat feasible I guess.

It still has the factory exhaust on it. Will look for leaks when i start it again. Pretty sure it's stock jetting in it. Was thinking maybe just taking the carb off and cleaning it again. Been sitting for 10 years.

check the gasket/sleeve from the header to the muffler. Everyone that I have seen leaking has backfired..........
