So I went to my Honda dealer and got a spark plug
for my wifes 110, upon getting it I noted to parts guy
that the plug I had in it was significantly shorter in thread
length, he insisted I had wrong plug in bike. I said are
you sure? I don't want a busted piston! He says oh no
way, no difference, this is the plug you need, ok, so I put
in the plug, turned it over, and guess what,..... no compression!!
pulled the plug back out to find the tip busted off and a
hole in top of my piston! To their credit, he said to bring
him the bike and they will fix it free of charge. But it sure
Ruined a 70 degree great riding day!

So now you are going to let the people fix your trike, that can't even tell you the right spark plug to run???? Good luck on that one.

Well, maybe the guy selling the parts wont be the guy doing the work..hopefully. Either way, sucks it happened. But at least they are going to rectify the situation at their expense....and rightfully so.

I just wish if it had to happen, it would've been my
smoking 185S!! The 110 is a immaculate bike and all
Stock, didn't smoke, all original plastic, very clean trike
And my wife is just comfortable on that one, she's rather
New in the atc scene and I bought that one for her. But
aslong as the rectify the situation I will be ok with
it. It just sucks because I really did make a strong point
in regards to the thread length. And I was assured even
Moreso when he showed me the exploded diagram right
on they're computer when I brought it up. I'm not a mechanic
by trade but am self sufficient and had my o.p.e license
At age 16!! But I just don't have the time to do these things
I buy Honda's so I don't have to!! Lol! Both trikes I own
Have original pistons, rings, rods, etc,... and start and run
On 1st pull every time! The 185 smokes a lil, but that is
Due to previous owner over filling with oil! And once I ride
For a hour it stops!

All I have to say is wow, that really sucks. Sure they say they are going to fix it but the point is it was perfectly fine before they sold you the wrong length plug. Don't rough them up to bad since they are going to fix it(don't want them to do a bad job). Hopefully everything works out without much hassle.

Looks like your parts guy is a reject mechanic. Not everyone is made to turn a wrench. Selling parts is as easy as the computer you are on......ya right....! I feel for ya man!

Well, think of the bright side: At least your engine will run like new (or, at least it should if they do the job right).

Update on 110, Honda dealer felt so bad, he has
Been in business 40 years and never made that mistake
They are fixing trike free of charge and also putting jets
In carb for me, I am putting new tears on 185 today
And needed valve stems , he gave them to me free of
Charge aswell! So by sat I will have it back and will post
Results. But so far I am very pleased with the response!

Most of the time I have found its easiest to just look in the manual and tell them what spark plug you need. Since most auto shops carry NGK its really easy that way.
rwilliams2142
03-07-2011, 12:37 PM
Lesson learned!! But atleast when I get it back
The carb will be tuned and I get another 20 years
Of worry free Honda riding!! I aware Honda made
A deal with the devil to get a engine that won't die!!
The stuff made now is pricey, and u won't be handing
It down to children!

So, good news is, it only bent the intake valve, and
They're throwing in the carb rebuild for parts only!
Should have it back by Sunday!!! I can't complain, and
With only charging parts for carb rebuild, I'm quite happy
So that being said, I think things are just grand with
Thus dealer!

It may not be their fault, I got a plug from my Honda dealer (dads work) and The plug was way to long, I then got the same plug just with an "S" at the end for "short" im guessing.
(thats what i had in before also)
so maybe there is some wrong info in the Honda dealers computers. Because you are not the only one who got the wrong plug, I Just knew it was going to be too long and got what I already had, same plug number just with an "S"...
maybe just a coincidence?

Sounds like they treated you well. I hope they offered to change the cam chain guides while it was apart, they get very noisy regardless of the valve adjustment.
Glad to hear they're working with you. Thats a pretty good bike shop! IMHO..............

That's cool they are standing behind what they sold you. I could see some dealers saying you installed it wrong or something and you're SOL even though it was their fault

I am a little confused. You said it busted the tip off the plug and knocked a hole in the piston. Now they are telling you its just a bent valve. ??? Did I miss something? How would the plug bend a valve? And what about the hole in the piston?

if theres a hole in the pistion make sure they get the chunk of aluminum out of your motor
rwilliams2142
03-11-2011, 12:44 PM
I assumed it was a hole in the piston, ended up
The intake valve was open and that's what got the
Plug, so it bent keeping it open, I'm glad it wasn't
The piston!! The lack of compression is what
Led me to believe the piston was shot.

The valve hit the plug? Is that possible??? Sounds far fetched to me

the 110s combustion chamber is TINY, Honda crammed in 2 valves and a spark plug in there. the valves come out diagonally in a cross pattern with the spark plug right in the middle.
if you get too long of a plug, the valve could easily hit the plug.
