how do you check the engine oil in a tri z 250? I took the cap of but there is no dip stick. and what kind of oil and how much.

On that crankcase there should be a screw (should say"oil check") where you can losen it. When filling it,having that screw lose oil will be coming out,when it does it means that is the full level. Make sure you retighten the screw. I think i explained good? if not someone will correct me. :? :)

As for how much,i'm not sure.

Nope you said it good. the screw is to the right and lower than the oil plug. you'll see it.

so fill it to the top? what kind of oil?

NO DONT FILL IT TO THE TOP! Take the screw out on the right side cover, then start putting oil in. When oil starts to come out the screw hole, you've got enough oil. I run the QuakerState 10W40 for me, works fine. After I rebuild I think I'm gonna switch to quaker syntech and see how it works. I'll get a pic of the cover sometime.

If you fill it to the top,there will be some problems. Just make SURE that screw on the side of the crankcase is lose.

I always ran amsoil crank case oil in my Z.
