i just picked up a big red for $175 bucks the guy told me it ran and drove fine and was sitting idling in his yard and it quit. he didn't think it was normal. bad since it ran very good. he grabbed the kick starter by hand pushed down on it it was seized and never went farther then that. i grabbed the kicker and yes its sized. it is full of oil recent change with filter oil looks brand new. what do you guys think the problem is thanks

Did you put your filter in backwards and burn up the motor? Pull the sparkplug, and try turning over the engine... Report back with details...

i checked the filter its in right. oil level full. took the rocker box off. cam looks excellent lots of oil getting up there. i looked in the spark plug hole intake valve open piston down. i try-ed kicking it over with good down pressure no luck. i did buy this bike for parts. just was thinking may try to fix motor. but how can it seize up on idle and new oil and filter. the guy was a older man he started restoring it. all new diff gears bearings etc.then this happened.

I actualy had that happen to my first yt175 engine. The engine could have sat without running for sometime, like mine. Build rust up on the small end bearing. It ran fine until 1 of the needles in the bearing broke free and turned sideways. It siezed up an an idle. I'd almost bet it's that crank bearing.
Try putting it in neutral, getting it rolling, and pop it into gear. That will probably brake something, but it could free it up :-p If you want to get rid of the engine, send it my way :) I'll toss a new crank in there and put it in my 200m :)

Only if you have a shaft drive 200m!

Its probably the rings rusted to the cylinder wall. If its full of oil the crank bearing would be mostly submerged in oil. I would put an acetone/ATF mix down the spark plug hole and let if sit for a few days. Might have to rebuild the upper end with some new rings and a hone if it was truely running good before it sat. Put some ATF down the spark plug hole, let it sit for a few days. In the mean time clean your entire fuel system, carb, lines, tank, petcock, and install an inline filter. Absolutely great trikes once you get them going, the 250ES if a great work and trail machine.

I'm going to remove the top-end and see what is going on.

what are the chances the kicker/starter reduction gears broke/jammed.
NOT uncommon.
Can you push it over in gear with the sparkplug out?

i tried pushing it over in gear with no luck its stuck. i was thinking that something was stuck/broke in the bottom end.i put oil in the cyl to see if it will free up. how do you put up pics on here.

under your post, it says
'manage attachments' and then you can juggle your pictures that way..
so dude, I've had 3 of these suckers blow chunks on the starter gears.
not the actually starter gear necessarily, but the reduction gears that feed the crank.
and are tied in with the kicker.
they break, warp, bend or whatever and jam up so nothing will move.
it's a fairly simple side cover removal to see the (easily replacable) carnage.
If you're going to tear into it, at least check the cam timing marks against the crank TDC on the off chance the timing chain jumped but like you said.
how could it seize while idling so perfectly if the oil filter is not in backwards.
and I assume the piston won't move in gear, plug out, in either direction? fore and aft?

Check the starter reduction gears. I had them go before and it jammed the fly wheel.

yes i found PCs of starter gears in the stator.the first thing i did was take the kick starter side off looked around and found that the clutch bolt backed off all the way. the one with the plates but not the problem. took the stator side off 2 PCs of reduction gear missing off one gear i found them in the stator and fly wheel. motor turns over free now. i may have a good motor. after all. a bonus. thanks for the help guys and gals.
