I am going to little sahara sand dunes on the 11th. I havnt really ran with any 450s or 400 quads or banshees or anything. My 85 250r has a fresh bore/wiseco and an airbox eliminator kit and is soon to have an aftermarket silencer. other than that, she is pretty stock but man its got some power. What bikes do you guys think i will be able to run with?

Banshees and 450's.. Basically all of the popular stuff.. Infact you should be a bit faster than them, but it depends on how modified they are..

no way.. not with a stock engine.. maybe if they cant ride or you holeshot them really good on FLAT ground.. And I cant remember the last time i saw a banshee or 450 that didnt at least have an aftermarket exhaust.. uncorked 450's are fast.. as are piped banshees.. 250's can still run with 'em, but doubtful a stock one will..

Banshees aren't as hyper speed as a lot of guys think... Averaging out a lot of the claims, I'm seeing a 72mph top speed, as the average. That's with the handful of guys claiming 72-73 on radar, and all of the nutcases saying 120mph
As for my claim, I think 72mph is a good estimate.. I dragged a piped one up here not long ago with the Tecate (Kx cylinder, DG pipe, flatslide mikuni..) on the pavement (and yes it's perfectly fine to ride on pavement up here), he was only ahead of me by a couple of lengths, we had more than 1/4 mile to drag it out, downhill slightly.. He was only creeping away from me... My buddy also said about 68-69mph on his 04 450R with a DG, and he's a light guy.
So, SAFE to say that you will have fun out there.. Should keep up with a lot of the quads.. Banshees, 450r's, ect .ect., especially considering you have a lighter ride that doesn't have to get as many wheels moving.. Don't think anyone is going to be hitting top speed going UP the dunes anyways
But it's still an opinion.. Everyone has one ;)

so with a modified tecate you lost a drag to a piped banshee on flat ground? Now imagine what would happen with a stock 250 trying to race uphill on sand... the larger displacement shines uphill... I completey agree that any 250R will be plenty fun, and will have no problems keeping up with the pack out on a ride..

Yes, but I don't think I was denying that Banshees are pretty speedy... But they're still a QUAD... And everyone and their mother has one...

You should have no problems beating the 400ex's and KFX400s as long as they aren't insanley built. I know this for sure because just last year I was breaking in a restomoded 250r new everything with some upgrades. On the pipe that thing killed my kfx400 with a pipe and the 400ex stock didn't stand a chance. That thing was a blast to go fast on. I still prefer the fourstroke for the tight stuff and leisure riding. You should hang with anyone, beating might be a stretch.

Those I would put money on getting in the high 90's low 100's easily.
Found this video of what looks like a fairly stock banshee engine that's piped running against a raptor 700:

Clock says 68mph and sounds like the banshee is running wide open..
