Found a pic of a xl650l threewheeler. Pretty cool huh? It has a xl650l chassis, tecate triple clamps, xr forks, custom burgard atv swingarm, speedometer, brake light, licence plate, and d.o.t. tires.

 That was in Dirtwheels a while ago!
I love that trike....and it gave me the whole idea of making my next trike street legal. I thought it used the stock 350X chassis with mods for the larger engine though. I could be wrong...
The guy lives in PA if I remember right too.

Does it have a differential? It's required for street legality in Michigan.

No differential, the guy lives in pa, stock xl650l chassis, I think the fenders are from a 350x.

I've always thought this would be cool to build, only street legal trikes around here are either Goldwings or Harleys or those lame Chevy powered couches.

In Dirtwheels ocotber 02 issue it says that it uses tecate triple clamps, and I think the frame looks a little taller than a 350x could be wrong though

who says you cant just run the registration off the dual sport bike that you converted? all it says is something like "19xx brand X MCY, Cyl 1 ccxx" doesnt say anything about # of wheels. Passing inspection is a whole other subject, though. But then again, you could always take it in to be inspected as a bike, and then change it back. Most cops, I figure would just scratch their heads, or compliment you on your creation.

I don't know jack about Tectates but don't they have a rear differential? I thought at least 1 Kawi trike did... If so wouldn't they be a good canidate for a street-legal conversion? Pop on some radial tires and turn signals? I dunno. Sweet 650x though!

No...Tecate's were chain drive like all other sport models ;)

the owner told me that hes been in 4 diffrent states with it (i belive he lived in NJ) and has been pulled over 6 times. every time the cop is more trying to figure out how he got it licensed not if it is all legal.

kawi did make a trike with a diff it was a priarie(? spelling)i believe a 200cc shaft drive
on one side there was a locking nut or something to lock it so it would send power to both wheels.
a guy i know had one i was told it isn't 4 sale then found out he sold it about a month later.

On a trike (or any ATV with a diff.), They still have a solid rear axle like a sport model, except that its enclosed in an axle housing....its not limited slip just because there is a differential.

In Michigan, the cops would take the time to find something illegal on that trike. I have to drive 3 hrs to get to the closest public land I can legally ride on, but there are 3 state parks within 45 minutes that I can ride my snowmobile on. That's right- sleds are OK, wheeled ORV's are banned. I may have to build something like this right to the letter of the law just to mess with em...

I checked the laws in Mi. recently, and you are right... The differential is the tuff part. I was checking to see if my trike would be legal in Mi., since I spend a fair amount of time there. The MSP gave me the O.K. since I have only one drive wheel.
I have an idea that may work, I'll have to check with the MSP during my next trip. If O.K., it will be relatively cheap to make. Are you interested?

Sure would! It would be fun to (legally) mess with their minds... 8)

No....just because it has a differential dosent mean you can lock and unlock the axle. Its still a solid axle. Are you talking about the black thing inside the wheel? Thats just there to cover the nut that holds the hub on...

This is what jason85atc250r says:
i used to have one a 83 200cc one if i remember rite. they have a regular manual clutch. it was just as fast as a honda 200x. it's fun driving around with the rear in the open position only one rear wheel has power like a car. when you turn and the innner tire lifts it spins then when it grabs and pulls a wheely.
This is the klt200 not the 250......
I know there is a differental like a car i have read other people talking about it on here before.

thank you i thought i was the only one that has seen one of these machines
the one i saw was a red praire or how ever you spell it.
it wasn't a diff. it was a live axel that sould be unlocked to power one wheel or locked to power both wheels...
that would work on a street legal machine here in ny

i had a praire and i believe it was a 200. it had a black locker nut on the inside of the wheel. when it was unlocked only one wheel would turn. then when you locked it, it would pull posi. i hated that stupid machine. if you had one tire that was remotely lower than the other, then it would pull loke a mother when it was locked. it drove nicely while unlocked. and as a matter of fact on the rear plasitc it said the word "differential" so it has a locker in there like the old style 4x4 trucks
