THIS IS MY WIFES 81'. It has the aftermarket front triple tree setup and I am adding rear suspension useing a yz 80 parts bike. The engine will also be mildly built so keep watching and let me know what you think or if you have questions. This was all done today 2-25-2011

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185008.jpg

After some muratic acid / dollar tree orange cleaner mix the engine looks a lot better.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185030.jpg

Finally got it all apart and the bearings were ridiculous. Now time to move onto making to making a swingarm.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185032.jpg

This bike is a 1985 YZ 80 I am using the forks and the swingarm bits time cut it up.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185034.jpg

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185036.jpg

I am not using the linkage assembly so I flipped the swingarm upside down to get a shock mount on top.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185039.jpg

I had to cut a couple lines in the middle of the swingarm on both sides so I could bend the swingarm in a half inch to line it up.

http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz194/johnbrakingground/185%20S/ATC185043.jpg
Well I will still weld in some bracing top, bottom and cross bracing but thats it for today. Let me know what you think.

Good recomendation for a rear shock. I have one of these FOX Air shox for a modern buggy in a smaller size 5.5 inches of travel. I could revalve it to make it more cush I guess. Anyone use these before?http://www.offroadwarehouse.com/view.just.image/src=/ecom/images/product/138.137.600x400.Fox_Racing_2.0_Air_Shock.jpghttp://i38.tinypic.com/2qsqi3m.jpg

Forget that I put the shock up under it and it was way to long. Oh well do think a blaster shock would be good enough? My wife only weighs 110 lbs.

Wow 115 views and not one opinion. I guess I am building the wrong trike. Someone say that sucks ass or something. I thought it was neat. lol

Well I think it looks pretty awesome. What mix of muratic acid did you use to clean the engine? It will be a hell of a fun trike when you're done.

I think no one is offering an opinion since no one has a suspension 185s quite like yours. So no one has much to contribute. We're all just watching and waiting to see how it turns out.

I've had a couple of suspended 185s trikes and they typically keep the support that you have cut out. IMHO that should have been left in.

I've been watching and this is a unique project like Vealmonkey states. I'll humbly offer you a swinger built by Nicholson that you may copy and send back if you ultimately choose not to continue with this build. With that said my comments are to encourage you not to discourage you.

ametzker
02-27-2011, 02:00 PM
Rapid Rick the support you were talking about that I cut out, Haha yeah I figured that out too. I assume the part you were talking about was the rear brace that holds the engine mount. I don't have the pic up yet but I cut the brace out from the rest of the swingarm and added it back in. Good catch man.

02-27-2011, 02:03 PM
200xMichigan I used about 1/4-1/3 Acid to water/orange cleaner mix. I also had to do it several times due to how bad the engine was corroded. The pics really don't do it justice. I sprayed the solution on and waited 3-4 minutes and then rinsed it off. Rinse and repeat.

I just ordered a laundry list of parts including these 400ex hubs that are 3.5 inches wider than the stock 400's. So I was thinking that should be about 5 inches wider that the stock 185.

EVERYONE....YES IF YOU HAVE 185/200 SUSPENSION PICS, PLEASE POST THEM ON THIS THREAD. It would be neat to see whats been done and I don't have to search everyones threads that may have done this before. It would be great to make this a killer 185 thread. Plus it gives not only me but maybe some of you ideas for their trikes. Thanks again I love this forum.

I did a little more today. I have the swingarm attached. Now I need to finish weld the brackets and beef it up a bit. The shock is just for mock up and pics I will be using a blaster shock.
ALSO IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SEE MY SONS FINISHED QUAD THAT I POSTED A THREAD ON PAINTING IT LAST WEEK. Turned out nice for what it is and the $120 total investment including purchase price=)
Sorry the pics suck, I ordered a new Nikon d110 on thursday, this cheap thing is a pos, and the one I used for the other pics just stopped working today

Looks like its coming along real good. What are the front forks off of?

ametzker
02-28-2011, 01:30 PM
Not sure what the current forks are off of. The guy I bought it from said they were off a 250r dirtbike, But I doubt it.. I think when I did a quick measurement they were 30mm. Either way they are destroyed. I am going to use the YZ80 forks from the bike I got the swingarm off of.

Here is the label from Hi Performance Products on the front forks. I wish I could get a replica of this sticker.

Vealmonkey
02-28-2011, 01:57 PM
Those forks were probably originally meant for or came on an atc90/110 that someone had modified at sometime. If the forks were meant for a 250r, then they wouldn't fit on your trike. That sticker should not be too hard to copy for someone who does things like that. Contact blue27, a member on here, he may be able to help you on the sticker reprinting.

ametzker
02-28-2011, 02:32 PM
Vealmonkey yes I agree 250r forks even in the early 70's would have been at minimum 34mm. These trees were meant and made for the 185 or at least offered. Look at this advertisment

This is my wife's trike and I want to do a special paint scheme, just wanted your opinions. My wife is pretty hot if I do say so myself....and I do. She has black hair and fair skin so I thought about a Wonder Woman paint scheme. Something using these colors with a heavy flake. I'm at work and I think thats why you can't see the pic I tried to post. I will post again later.

so far it looks AWSOME and i bet it will get even better at the end, i cant wait to see the finished ATC ! Do the hubbs off the 400ex fit right on your trike? id like a wider rear end on my trike, i was thinking about spacers but if differenct hubbs work id go with that.

ametzker

Yes the hubs off the 400ex have the same splines and will make it significantly wider.

Thanks 90crazy. Pretty sweet. IMO if your going to give it some suspension then really give it a little more travel than that. But depending on the track they probably weren't looking for all out travel. I will post some more pics tomorrow. I got a bunch of goodies in the mail today including GForce billet wide hubs, some Maxxis Mud Bug tires and bars, brakes, cables and aluminum sprocket. Felt like christmas when I got home from work and all that stuff was sitting at my door step.

Well I finished my swingarm today(other than putting in new bearings). I welded up some more bracing and powdercoated the whole thing in a semi-chrome powder. Cooked it in my wifes oven. Turned out pretty good and it holds up nicely.

I'll post pics tomorrow but I wanted ya'll to know that I hadn't stopped working on it. The rear upper shock mount has been a little tricky. I mounted it today and the rear end sits a little high for my liking. I will remount it tomorrow and throw some more pics up. When you sit on it, it has a very plush feel and I would guess the swingarm has extended the axle out 4-5 inches from where it was stock. Looks nice though and actually works well.

what are you doing about the airbox. i seen a lot of pic of 185s's with suspension but known of them gave a clear view of the airbox. i must have an airbox to attach my snorkle to. the stuff i play in requires a snorkle. i have taught long and hard about the small project you are on, but the only thing holding me back is the airbox. i don't mean to tie up your thread with my questions, but pic of what you are doing will be helpfull. by the way nice work. it good to see people building their toys the way they want them instead of going out and buying a quad.

So things went backwards before they could go forward. The swingarm had to be modified again and again and again, Then I had to move the swingarm mounts up higher which made me have to buy a new shock. Check out the progress.

I want to run 12v lighting on this trike, can anyone tell me if the moose voltage regulator is what I need. I just want to run some fog lights or harbor freight lights on it. Or can I just connect it to the stock wires and run it as is? Thanks for the help

Xowner
03-30-2011, 04:14 PM
pretty sure you can just hook it up right to the stock wires. If it had lights befor there is already a regulator built in it!

jb2wheels
03-30-2011, 07:44 PM
The 185s does not have a regulator - the lights are the regulator.
The electrical system runs 12V AC to a 45W headlight and a 5W taillight. The lights don't care if you send them AC or DC.

If one bulb dies, the other goes with it because the extra juice has gotta go somehwere.

So, you can probably run a 55W light up front with no tail light and it will be bright enough. Maybe.

As a point of referrence - I had an 84 ATC 110 engine in a 78 ATC 90 frame. I used parts store LED marker light for a tail light. I managed to burn out both a 45W headlight and the tail light before I figured out the LED tail was using much less wattage than the original. I put a Moose regulator on that trike - problem solved and the stock headlight was plenty bright.

ATC 110 and ATC 185s = almost identical lighting systems.

If you're going to experiment, use the Moose regulator - it will keep you from blowing bulbs while you figure out what you're doing.

ametzker
04-17-2011, 09:14 PM
Acidburn those were actually rollerblade wheels but I have changed to skateboard wheels since. I can't see paying $15 a piece for "chain rollers" when I can purchase a brand new skateboard for $10 from Walmart for my kid and use his old one that has 4 wheels on it. Now thats smart shopping. If they can take rolling around on concrete with 80-200lbs on them, then they should work fine for what I need.

Wow thats awesome, as a small child about 8-12 I allways wanted someone to ride with. Allways had to ride alone cause my dad was allways working and my step brother would come over during summer for about 2 weeks and he had a yfz450 and I had a bayou250. So you can see why that wasnt really riding with someone  And they are also so lucky to be involved with trikes at their age, My dad never would buy me a three wheeler "what you need is a good four wheeler" But at the age of 15 (last year) I finaly got my own money for pulling my brothers trans out of his car, and Baught my own! Man I was so happy, Your kids are so lucky. They have someone to argue with whos driving and whos pushin when we are stuck. :TrikesOwn

I was the same way, but my dad didn't ride at all. I was the lone ranger :wonderingwhen it came to being interested in motorsports. I wish I had the oportunities I try to give my kids. My 10 year old has a Dirtbike, a three wheeler and a side by side. He is becoming more interested in riding as he gets older and his friends think its cool. My 4 year old is a carbon copy of me.....he has been into bikes from day one. I actually bought another 1981 Z50R Honda for him, that was my first bike:p and that was in 1985. I put an automatic electric start engine with training wheels on it because he's not big enough to ride it yet. But he loves it. I married the right girl also, she's hot:naughty: and like beer and bikes. Congrats on getting your 200X I will be doing a vid on mine after I finish this project.

:rolleyes:Anyone had any expeirence with the tapered bearing replacment for the steering stems on the 185s. I ordered some because my mounts were buggered up quite a bit. It looks as though it just sits in the lip of the steering housing, but then the stem would need to be longer to make up for the extra bit of bearing/cage sticking out of both ends. :wondering Let me know?

i put these bearing in my brothers 250r and the top race did stick out about an 1/8 of an inch when it was seated. so that was how i put it together and it works fine and smooth i just took it a part after each of the first few rides with them and they where fine there way better the the loose balls

I added a couple new pics because I noticed there was not one pic on the whole bike before I started LOOK AT THE ABOVE THREAD

Also the young kid in some of the vids and pics is my best friends son Pedro "Blue" is his nickname. He lives and breaths everything motosports, like myself they don't come from wealthy families so he comes over and I teach him how to wrench on the bikes and paint and whatever else. In return the last few bikes that he has had has been ones we restored together and did on small budgets. Good kid.
Both my kids are a little young to do to much work but my 10 year old is coming around and the 4 year old loves helping out. Good times

05-18-2011, 03:41 AM
Thanks Vealmonky for pointing that out. It is braced inside and out with 1/4 plate steel. Pretty sure that is a little stronger than some of the chinsy tubing I seen used with those aftermarket kits offered back in the day.

Thanks for all the comments about the trike the wife and my dad. THis is truly a great bunch of people.
Vart- Yes a love the extended hubs, the forks are from an 85 yz80, gas tank is from a 78 IT 175, the seat is from an 83 KX 250 and the rear plastics are from a banshee. The front fender is stock LOL.

This is an optical illusion - If you look for 30 seconds, a trike appears in a drive way with a wooden fence and tree behind it.

I really appreciate the thread, I have been wanting to do something like this to both my 200s and 185s. Did you make the mounts that are welded to the swingarm too? That's where I get stumped. Keep updating....very cool.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes the mounts were just made out of some metal I had lying around. I just welded it where I thought it looked right and then drilled a hole through it for the axle. Make sure you have all your bearings and spacers in the swingarm to get an accurate measurement before welding. LOL
