I am new and would really appreciate some advice

I just got an 85 big red 250es and got it started with cables.It will mot kick start only catches once in a while ..also does not shift properly..i had to use my hand to shift up.any tips will greatly be apperciated

Welcome to the site. Use the search at the top of the page and search for service manuals. You will find the manuals in PDF format. Next sounds like you got internal problems and I am sure someone here will chime in with a direction for you look for the problems.
