Found this but not sure if it is a Tri Z. Should I get it? I saw parts on ebay, but how hard is it to find critical parts? What do you guys think?

Well I would give them $200 for it, but try to beat him down for sure. You could part it and make your money back easy enough.

You can't loose for $100. Would be a lot to fix but it would be one more trike back on the trail. I'm picking up a Tri-Z soon. Can't wait.

What is the rarity in your area? & how far are you willing to travel? You're actually pretty close to nice & complete AZ trikes in a sense. To build from the ground up is costly and requires years and patience if on a budget. Better to drive a thousand miles, rent a motel and spend a couple hundred on gas and get a screamer. Unless, however, the build and perseverance is your thing. However, if that is bought, someone may need some parts off of it eventually and you could help out the Z crowd and re-coup the dough. Good find though, and good luck, happy to see the effort.

Well, This is the first one I have seen in this area. I'm on craigslist almost everyday and Ive never seen a Tri-Z or a Tecate. I am close, and I would be willing to drive pretty far for the right price. I am really excited about getting this bike although I know It will take me a long time to get it running. I can wait. I just want to get it home no matter how bad it looks. like you said. If I can revive it that would be great! I am not going to buy just to make money off of it. Im in it to bring it back to life or help others get theirs running. I guess i would part it out if had to. Right now I have to wait until Sunday. The guy is going out of town until Sunday :(:(

I saw that tri-z987 is parting his Tri_Z out in the classifieds. How hard is it going to be to find a motor for this? I did not see a complete one on ebay.

If you have the time and patience you will be able to find a motor on here or ebay, they pop up every so often. Plus they can be shipped so it's not like you need to find one on your local craigslist.

Oh yea! If I get this Z Sunday, I will have to be very patient. Funds are depleted and this project will be put on the back burner for a while. I don't care, I just want to have it in my posession. Then I can worry about the rest.
Racer88 - How much would you let it go for?

I'd like to trade it for some 84' tecate bits, wide axle, race pipe or longer swinging arm???

I have a spare Z motor. parts are not easy to find especially for the motor.
tri-z987 probably has all the parts you need.

Here's the one I just picked up. Its totally complete and was a steal. But I got it from a friend who didn't use it anymore so that's why I got it so cheap. I hardly ever see them here for sale either. I would grab it up. 2 strokes are addicting. Good luck with it.

This is what I started with on my 81r build.
Just strip and rebuild everything you have there and buy parts slowly for it. The crank looks really weather, the motor might be a lost cause but good for parts. Be patient and search for parts.

This was the day I sold it. Needed chain, motor painted and seat cover installed. Some of then parts were: New bearings, new rear rims, new fenders, desert tank, new exhaust, engine COMPLETELY tore down and rebuilt. Last bore tho. All kinds of used parts on it from this site too. Loads of parts went with it when I sold it. It was a great feeling tho working on it and bringing it back from the dead. I paid $400 for the sad looking thing.
My poor 18 year old cat Charm made the pic too. He died a little while later. The best cat EVER, that was like a dog.

Well, the engine certainly needs work
I'd pull the engine apart and see how bad it is before making any decisions....

looks like a project for sure... but all my trikes started that way... id say the motor is good for only parts at this piont... id scrap the tri z 250 motor idea and just cut to the chase and throw a yz 490 in it you can pick up those fairly easy and could get a runner for less than it would take you to start a rebuild on the tri z motor

Thanks for the pics Brockey. Sorry about charm! Engine looks real bad. Lots of rust in there. I am going to tear it down and see if i can do anything with it. If not I will have to consider Rollinmenace's Idea. 490 huh? send me a link to a thread on that so I can read up on what it entales.

As for your motor. I had one like that. The crank was junk and all the bearings were toast. A wire wheel on the bench grinder cleaned up the rest of the gears etc. New bearings and seals and another crank and I used the cases.

Now, Should I go with a big bore 250 or should I go with the 490? Do I need to gusset the frame for the 490? I don't remember from the 490 Saga thread.

haha i dont think the 490 would be much of a "daily rider" it would be more of a thing to pull out when trailprotrailpro friends come over and see who has the biggest **lls in the group!

UPDATE!!!! Took engine apart and the thing was still full of oil!! All insides look great except for part of the crank that was exposed. A little bath in PB Blaster and it broke loose. I will continue to break it down and see if I can get it as clean as possible and get it to rotate as well as possible. Has anyone brought one back to life from similar situation?

Defiantly going to be a labor of love, but those are the most satisfying when they're finished. Glad to hear the engine may be salvageable.
