I took my astro conversion for a ride yesterday since it was so nice here in western NY and made it about half a mile. I let it warm up before i left, took it easy for a minute, then let her have it only too hear a knocking sound and a mind up with a locked up motor. I got it apart today and to my surprise the cylinder is in great shape. There's no ridge or scratches on the walls. The skirt broke off the piston and the upper part of the piston has crack in it. Can anyone tell me why this happened? was the piston to wall clearance too much and it was slapping around? Here are a couple pics of the cylinder, head, piston, and remainder of the skirt, there are more at my photobucket link http://s1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/joeswatland/t3%20engine/
on a good note, check out the porting on it:-)

i would agree with your assumption of a clearance issue, mixed with a lack of lubrication and thats what you get... so now that you blew her up what do you want for it?

I had 50:1 Klotz in it, i don't see why lubrication would be the an issue. Make me an offer. I have a feeling its going to get parted out now. We'll have to see though, might have a deal come through.

I never run 50:1 in anything with wheels. 32:1 is my choice for lubrication any day of the week.

nothing to do with oil... either a clearance issue or piston just plain needed to be changed... you are lucky the cylinder is still good... i dont run cast pistons for this very reason.

edit: I cant believe you would consider selling or parting it over a $120 in parts????

It was for sale when i blew it up. Its a sleeved cylinder also so even if it was messed up it could be bored out. To a point

If that's the machine I think it is, it doesn't appear to have been paid too much attention over the years. These things are 25 years old. At some point you just have to rip 'em down to nothing and start over.

Thanks for the wisdom everyone, i never had anything like this happen before. I guess it could have been a lot worse.
250 sx-I was asking $1000 before the incident.

Do you have any pictures of the bike?

That motor should be gone thru top to bottom now. Which is in the price range of $800. Thus making that little project not worth $1000. But more like a few hundred maybe.

Here's the album K00leo. Look in the classifieds for a thorough description. I think i'm going to keep it and turn it back into a three wheeler.

250sx- Yea, you re right about the motor, not about the couple hundred though. Probably around $1000 in parts sitting there. Like i said, i think im gonna keep it.
