I'm in the process of doing a complete tear down/rebuild: but on another note im a new owner of this 84r and the shifting never really felt right (kinda sloppy). Once i pulled the motor from the bike i found the issue , here is a picture of the shift shaft i pulled from the trike. Let's see how good you guys are ! The top shaft in the picture is what i took out that was sloppy and the bottom shaft in the picture is the replacement shaft. What was the previous owner on ? WOW . Build is going slow , waiting on jug to get back from the shop and was sent the wrong seals . http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee117/unpure_photo/shiftshaft.jpg

What's sad is i rode it and it shift fine , he gumped up some jb weld around the case and shift shaft that i didn't notice. Held it all together for a couple of rides then broke loose and got all sloppy . What shift shaft is this from 82R ? or different bike all together ? They ae the same but the right 84R shift shaft is longer .

what kind of shift problems were u havin ? i have an 84 and my chain stops turning in gears 3,4,5,.1 and 2 work fine.I have the short one like in the picture in my 84,but not sure what the prob is.

The short shaft just pulled out away from the gear inside and wouldn't let me shift anymore. With the right shaft in there now it shifts fine.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the engine won't fit back in the frame with the 81-82 shaft on it...you'll need to find the correct shaft from an 83-84. apparently that's the only difference with the engines...the longer shaft will hit the frame on you 84.

Huh ? The longer shaft is out of a 84R i was told . The shorter shaft just moved in and out , so the longer shift shaft isn't the correct shaft ?

Nope. I just did alittle research and Flossy is correct , The longer shaft is out of a 81-82R and the short shaft is the correct shaft. Maybe the lock clip on mine slid down and caused all the sloppy play. Ticks me off , good thing i didn't start putting it back together . Thanks for the input flossy! Is there any way to restore/ fix splines on this shift shaft ?

ive cut the splines off other shift shafts and welded them to mine to fix them you need a mig welder not a arc

OK. Thanks for the info , I just went out and looked at the shorter shaft and yes the lock clip slid down the shaft which caused all the slopp.

i fogot to metion both shafts have to be ground to a point so you can grind it flat after or it wont go thru the seal

You can cut thru the opposing side of the shifter opening (hack saw, cut off wheel, sawzall) so it can close/clamp down more on the shaft.

Chopping off one spline and adding another is lathe/mig/tapered work...........

i avoided useing a lathe i clamped the shafts in stait angle iron welded and then grinded it down
